Wells ends Huddersfield winless streak
Nahki Wells scored his fourth goal of the season to snap Huddersfield Town’s five-game winless streak at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday.
The Bermuda striker pounced on a goalkeeping blunder to score the winner in a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Bristol City in the Sky Bet Championship.
Frank Fielding, the City goalkeeper, failed to control a back-pass, which allowed Wells to tap into the empty net.
Wells’s winner arrived just minutes after Fielding handled outside the area as the striker gave chase, but escaped with only a yellow card, much to the frustration of Huddersfield and their fans.
Earlier, Elias Kachunga and City’s Tammy Abraham traded first-half goals to send the teams into the interval level at 1-1
“I am very happy for Nahki,” David Wagner, the Huddersfield head coach, said. “The goal came from a mistake by the goalkeeper but Nahki chased down the ‘keeper and deserved that.
“Nahki works very hard and he had a role in the first goal when he made a run to open up the space for Elias.
“The players performed very well against a very hard opponent and we are very happy and proud.”
Huddersfield’s victory was their first since a 1-0 triumph over Derby County on October 22 and moved them up to fourth in the table.
“This was a massively huge win for us — 20 games have gone and we have ten wins, which is fantastic,” Wagner said. “But we can only celebrate for a few minutes before we focus on the next game.”
Huddersfield are away to lowly Burton Albion tomorrow as the Championship holds a full round of midweek fixtures.
Kachunga scored the opening goal in the tenth minute after fine link-up work with Tommy Smith culminated in the striker heading home the latter’s cross from close range.
City eventually hit back in the 33rd minute through Abraham, who punished the home side for failing to clear their lines from a set-piece.
Abraham’s equaliser drew heavy criticism from the home fans as Aaron Wilbraham appeared to be offside as he rolled the ball past goalkeeper Danny Ward and into the path of the striker, who is on loan from Chelsea, to finish.
Wells, who was through one-on-one with Fielding when the goalkeeper handled the ball outside the area, was again on to the goalkeeper quickly to score the decisive goal in the 58th minute.
In League Two, Reggie Lambe was a first-half substitute for Carlisle United in a 1-1 draw away to fellow promotion chasers Luton Town. All the scoring was inside the first ten minutes, with Jason Kennedy putting Carlisle ahead after five minutes and Danny Hylton replying ten minutes later.
Lambe took to the pitch with 11 minutes left in the first half after midfielder Mike Jones succumbed to injury. Carlisle are second on goal difference from Doncaster Rovers, who were beaten 2-0 by new leaders Plymouth Argyle.
And, in League One, Rai Simons started his first league game for Chesterfield this season but his presence failed to stall the struggles of the East Midlands side, who were thumped 5-2 by Peterborough United and lie two points away from safety in 23rd place.
Simons, who has made only four league appearances, to go with four in cup competition, was replaced in the 67th minute with Chesterfield losing 3-2, having led 2-1 after a half-hour.
