‘Bright spark’ on verge of Bristol City move

Set to sign: Bascome is expected to be offered a contract by Bristol City

Osagi Bascome is on the verge of completing a move to Sky Bet Championship side Bristol City.

The 17-year-old son of Herbie and nephew of Andrew and David Bascome is expected to put pen to paper on a deal before the end of the year after impressing during his trial period at the club.

It is understood that City have already opened initial talks with the player’s agent and are now discussing the terms of a contract which could keep him at Ashton Gate beyond this season.

“We are talking to him at the moment to see if we can get something organised, because he has been very good for us,” Jamie McAllister, the Bristol City Under-23 manager, told the Bristol Post.

“We’ve been talking to his agent and we’re looking to do something. It’s a case of watch this space.

“He’s been a little bright spark for us and I’ve been happy with him, both in training and in the games. He definitely has something to offer.

“I’ve seen enough of him to know that his quality is very good and he is neat and tidy in a lot of what he does.”

Bascome, who made his Bermuda debut at home to Dominican Republic in a World Cup qualifier in June, is a product of the Aston Villa Academy and was offered a trial with Stoke City earlier this year.

Invited to train with City’s under-23 squad last month, Bascome made an immediate impact when stepping off the bench to score in a 3-1 win against Ipswich Town.

He also caught the eye during the under-23’s 2-0 victory over Portsmouth, earning a penalty after a powerful run during the first half.

Handed another opportunity to impress in Monday’s 3-3 draw with Cardiff City at the same venue, the forward found the going rather tougher when being asked to play up front on his own.

“I thought it was a bit difficult for him [on Monday], because he needs someone like Shawn McCoulsky [a tall striker] up there alongside him to stretch the defence and provide little pockets of space for him to come into,” McAllister added. “Because Diego [De Girolamo, the 21-year-old City forward] was playing as a No 10, we asked Osagi to be the runner in behind and that is not really his game.”

Bascome, who has family living in Bristol, spent last season playing youth team football at Spanish second-tier outfit Levante after a short spell with La Liga side Valencia.

The teenager comes from a family of sportsmen, his father and uncles were top footballers, while his brothers, Onais and Okera, have represented the island at cricket.
