Huddersfield march on with rare Norwich win

On the up: Wells did not get on the scoresheet this time, but Huddersfield still moved up to third in the table

Nahki Wells and his Huddersfield Town team-mates earned three vital points in a hard- fought 2-1 victory away to Norwich City in the Sky Bet Championship yesterday.

Elias Kachunga’s first-half brace secured the visitors’ first triumph at Carrow Road since 1969 and moved them into third place in the table.

Jonny Howson replied for the home team seconds after Kachunga opened the scoring.

Wells went into the match on a two-game scoring streak, having bagged his fourth and fifth goals of the season in Huddersfield’s previous two league outings against Bristol City and Burton Albion.

However, the Bermuda striker was unable to keep the streak alive.

Wells shot straight at John Ruddy, the Norwich goalkeeper, in the 22nd minute and was unable to get to a through-ball, which was shepherded back to Ruddy by defender Sébastien Bassong.

A wild back-pass presented Wells with another opportunity in the 38th. However, Bassong was able to thwart the danger as the 26-year-old homed in on Ruddy.

Wells also threatened after the break as he dragged a shot wide in the 69th minute after latching on to a beautiful pass through the channel.

The player’s frustration was perhaps best summed up when he was booked in the 71st minute for playing on after being blown offside.

Wells’s involvement on the pitch ended when he made way for Harry Bunn in the 76th minute.

Huddersfield took only five minutes to break the deadlock, Kachunga turning in Tommy Smith’s fizzing ball into the area.

However, the visitors’ joy was short-lived as Howson, the Norwich captain, headed Robbie Brady’s long ball into the box past Danny Ward, the Huddersfield goalkeeper, to draw the teams level less than a minute later.

Kachunga scored the winner and his eighth goal of the season in the 40th minute when the German striker stabbed the ball into the net after linking up again with Smith.
