Wells not fazed by transfer rumours

On the ball: Wells’s goals sparked a recent Huddersfield revival

Nahki Wells said he is not concerned about transfer speculation linking him to a potential move away from Huddersfield Town.

The Huddersfield striker is said to be a potential £8 million target for fellow Sky Bet Championship sides Norwich City and Fulham when the transfer window opens on January 1.

Speculation that Wells could be on his way out the door at John Smith’s Stadium heightened after David Wagner, the head coach, revealed that the Bermuda player had turned down a new contract offer in the summer.

Wells, 26, insists he is simply focusing on doing his best to help his team gain promotion to the Premier League.

“The task at hand at the moment is trying my best to help get Huddersfield promoted, so I’m not focused or bothered about the transfer window,” Wells said.

“I’m just focused on playing football and doing as well as I can. I’m just taking it one game at a time and, hopefully as a whole, we can reap the rewards and realise our ambitions of playing in the Premier League.”

Huddersfield are fourth in the table, ten points adrift of leaders Newcastle United.

“We are near the halfway stage of the season and still among it [promotion] and so we just have to keep doing what we’re doing,” Wells said. “Keep winning as many games as we can at home, keep that a fortress, and keep picking up points away from home.

“We are, in some people’s eyes, over performing. But I don’t see any reason why we can’t believe that promotion can happen and believe in ourselves that we can do it.

“It’s in our own hands and we just have to take every game as it comes and keep trying our best. We just have to keep winning matches and not be distracted by the small things.”

Huddersfield are among a trio of Yorkshire clubs in contention for promotion, including Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday.

“There are three Yorkshire teams in the race and I’m pretty sure it hasn’t been like that for a while,” Wells said.

Huddersfield are facing a hectic schedule over the festive period which will see them play three matches inside of seven days, starting on Monday at home against Nottingham Forrest.

Wells has struck form lately, scoring in two of his previous three appearances to take his overall tally to five, after enduring a lean spell.

“I went through a little bit of a tough spell where we weren’t creating many chances and I was, in a way, suffering from that,” Wells said.

“I was able to score an important goal, which got us the win at Bristol City, and then a winner the next game [against Burton Albion].

“I would like to think that set us on a run which got us three wins in three games. Long may it continue.”
