The Middle Schools Boys West team avenged a 5-1 loss last year when they beat the East 4-2 on penalties the National Sports Centre yesterday.

There were few clear scoring opportunities, with Stefan Simmons, of West, going close midway through the second half when his free kick from the edge of the penalty box was turned around the far post by the East goalkeeper.

West took the early advantage in the penalty kicks when Vishan Patton scored before Allan Martin had his kick saved. Matthew Moreno then scored for West and Jervay Laws for the East in the second round.

Sijay Samuels, of the West, then had his kick saved but the East could not tie it up as Alessio Dane-Pinardi also had his effort saved.

After that, the West held on by scoring their fourth and fifth kicks through Jazir Warner and Kymani McNeil while Oni Smith netted the fourth kick for the East.

“The kids played well, no one really got a break so it was a defensive match,” said coach John Barry Nusum who was happy to avenge last year’s loss. “They enjoyed it, I talked to them about working for each other and both teams didn’t give up which meant that the other team had to do something spectacular to score.

“To have to go to penalties is hard for both teams, but it was good for us to come out with a win, last year we got smashed. We have a couple of prep school coaches down to watch and it was good for them to see a good level of football. Even though it was 0-0 it was a good quality football.”

Nusum, a Bermuda international just a few years ago, is pleased with the young talent on the Island.

“Bermuda has a bright future when you look at our under-20s and the national team made up of a lot of young guys,” he said. “We have some bright stars for the future. It wasn’t that long ago for me, but my knees are telling me different.”

Dylan Arruda was the MVP for the West and Matthew Elliot for the East.

Tyquann Perinchief scored both goals in the East’s 2-0 win in the Senior School Boys game last night.

In the Senior School Girls match, East beat West 6-0 thanks to a Symira Lowe Darrell hat-trick. Teyah Lindo, Lauren Garvin and Micah Pond were also on target.

The East won a thriller in the Primary School Boys match 5-4 on Thursday night.

Jutorre Burgess scored twice for the East, with Jannis Roberts, Zano Tucker and Gianni Burgess also notching for the victors.

Sachiel Ming netted twice for the West, with Enrique Mendes and Enoch Joseph adding their other goals. Bakari Furbert was named MVP.
