PHC will not take St George’s lightly
Premier Division leaders PHC Zebras are wary of being on the receiving end of an upset in the FA Cup after being drawn at home to St George’s in the quarter-finals.
PHC, winners of the competition a record ten times, take on the East Enders — who knocked out Premier Division Boulevard in the first round — at PHC Field on March 12
X-Roads, who knocked out Devonshire Colts, will look to create another shock at Garrison Field when they meet the winners of the replay between Somerset Trojans and Dandy Town, who face each other at Somerset Cricket Club this evening with an 8pm kick-off.
BAA are the third First Division side who will meet top-flight opponents when they face holders Robin Hood at Goose Gosling Field in the Saturday night fixture on March 11. In the all-Premier Division match, North Village take on Devonshire Cougars at Bernard Park.
Michael Trott, the interim president of PHC after the resignation of Johnny Ball this month, said they would not be taking St George’s lightly after their 6-2 thrashing of Boulevard.
“We’re looking forward to the challenge of St George’s at Stadium Lane and we’ll do our best to make sure we get to the next round,” Trott said.
“I’m comfortable with what came out of the draw and we should be OK.
“We’ve been in this competition for many years and have won it the most, but we’re not going to take it for granted.”
PHC have been in two finals already this season, losing both to Devonshire Cougars.
However, this competition represents a third chance for new coach Scott Morton to win his first trophy in his maiden season.
“A lot of people forget that this is still a young team, only three guys on that team have won trophies,” Trott added.
“Everyone else has just come back from school or are coming up through the ranks.”
Yesterday, Ball revealed his decision to step down as president after three years was made months ago.
He was the club’s youngest president when he took over from Chris Furbert at the age of 28 in November 2013, with one of the highlights of his tenure being the reopening of PHC Field in January 2015 after it had been closed since March 1998.
“I informed my membership in October that I was stepping down, effective January 4,” said Ball, who plays left back for the senior team.
“The reason why is that goals have been achieved and the framework has been firmly established for future progress, so I’m happy with where the club is.
“I think we’ve made good strides and I have full faith in the executive to continue the progress that has been made.
“A lot of the goals I wanted to achieve during my term as president, I achieved such as reopening the field for the first time in many years.”
Ball was not able to enjoy that occasion, after being taken to hospital with a dislocated shoulder in the 3-1 loss to North Village. There have been some other initiatives at the ground since then.
“I pushed for the community fun day and was happy with the support of the membership and executive in making that happen,” Ball said.
“We had a black and white [stripes] week and hosted the Western Counties for the first time last year.
“We were also able to get additional sponsorship and revenue and we also had public discussions with other clubs and what we do in the community.
“I’m definitely leaving on a good note, but the membership and executive wanted me to stay on. I think I achieved a lot and will still be there to assist if they need me.”
A semi-annual meeting will be scheduled for March to appoint a successor, although vice-president Trott would not commit his interest in the position.
The draw was also made yesterday for the quarter-finals of the Masters and the Player Development League Knockout Cup competitions.
PHC, the holders of the Masters Cup, meet Prospect while St George’s Stallions take on Somerset Extros and St David’s play St George’s All-Stars.
Young Men’s Social Club were drawn against Hamilton Parish. The matches will be played on Saturday, February 11.
The PDL Knockout Cup matches from March 14 to 16 at BFA Field will pit Hood against PHC, X-Roads take Trojans and holders Town meet Young Men’s Social Club.
Devonshire Colts have a bye into the March 28 and 29 semi-finals.
