Wells impressed with loanee Brown

On the up: Wells's Huddersfield are fourth in the table

Nahki Wells has praised the early contribution of striker Izzy Brown, on loan from Premier League side Chelsea, as Huddersfield Town continue their promotion push.

Brown was brought in by head coach David Wagner to boost Huddersfield’s attack, with the 20-year-old scoring his first goal for the club in Saturday’s 2-0 win at home to Ipswich Town.

Wells played alongside Brown and believes there are more goals to come from the England Under-20 striker who made his Huddersfield debut this month in the 4-0 victory at home to Port Vale in the third round of the FA Cup.

Huddersfield will play Rochdale in the fourth round of the cup on Saturday.

“I have talked with Izzy, who has come in and done well,” Wells told the Huddersfield Examiner. “He came in for the Port Vale cup-tie, then played in a really tough game against Sheffield Wednesday. Izzy is a young player with a lot of talent and an eye for goal.

“He just has to keep working hard and helping the team as much as he can.”

Wells has netted seven goals, two less than top scorer Elias Kachunga, as Huddersfield prepare to play in two televised home games in the space of three days.

Next Thursday (4.45pm Bermuda time on SportsMax) they entertain leaders Brighton & Hove Albion and then on Sunday, February 5 (8am Bermuda time) they take on Leeds United, another promotion-chasing team.

Huddersfield are fourth in the Sky Bet Championship, tied on 49 points with third-placed Reading, while Leeds are a point behind in fifth place.

“Goals are coming from different places at the minute and it is important that people are chipping in and making a difference,” Wells said.

“It was always going to be a tough game against Ipswich. We didn’t expect them to come here and let us roll them over. They aren’t in the greatest form, but they certainly made it difficult for us out there on the pitch.

“We know this is our fortress, this is our home and we also know that if we want to challenge for the play-offs we need to pick up as many points at home as possible.”

Wells admitted he was disappointed not to score himself against Ipswich, but was pleased with his overall contribution.

“The most important thing is that we got the three points,” he said. “I got through a lot of work and can come off the pitch proud of my efforts knowing I did a good job.

“I contributed to a good performance, kept the ball well and helped to create chances. Although nothing fell for me in that game, I know I just have to keep my head up and carry on with how I am performing.”
