Wells has that promotion feeling at Huddersfield
Nahki Wells has drawn parallels between the promotion of his former team Bradford City from Sky Bet League Two in 2012-13 and Huddersfield Town’s Premier League push.
Wells helped fire Bradford to promotion, scoring 26 goals in all competitions that season, including one in a 3-0 win over Northampton Town in a play-off final at Wembley Stadium.
Having been twelfth in February, Phil Parkinson’s charges made the play-offs by two points. Bradford also reached the Capital One Cup final during that campaign, losing 5-0 to Swansea City at Wembley.
The 26-year-old form has not been quite so prolific this season, with seven goals in 26 games, although he has bagged four in his last eight to help lift Huddersfield to fifth in the table.
“There are a lot of similarities,” Wells told the Huddersfield Examiner. “At Bradford, like here, it’s a tight-knit squad with no clash of heads personality wise.
“It does seem that bigger squads can cause issues, but here, all the players are always pushing for a place and have a realistic chance of featuring.
“There’s a real group spirit here, as there was at Bradford, where we really came together to get over the line.
“After going out of the Capital One Cup, we put a run together and went into play-offs with momentum.”
n Khano Smith, the former Bermuda captain, has been praised by Tom Sermanni, the Orlando Pride head coach, for his assistance during the National Women’s Soccer League College Draft.
Smith, 35, was appointed assistant coach of the Pride in December 2015.
The Pride picked up forward Danica Evans, from Colorado, and midfielder Nickolette Driesse out of Penn State with their late-round draft picks.
The coaching staff went through hours of film and travelled to multiple games to get a good feel for who they would aim to be drafting.
“[Khano’s] been terrific,” Sermanni said. “He’s looked at numerous games and numerous videos, assessed the different players and he’s been a real valuable source of information for us today and leading into today, so he’s done the hard job on this draft.”
The Pride finished ninth in their maiden NWSL campaign last season.
