Social Club net late winner
The gap between the top two and the chasing pack in the First Division widened yesterday when Young Men’s Social Club and X-Roads both won while St George’s dropped two points against Wolves.
Social Club got a late winner against Southampton Rangers at PHC Field where Saki Tuzo netted five minutes from the end to seal a 3-2 victory for the unbeaten leaders.
Rangers took the lead in the first half through Khalil Symonds only for Social Club to score twice through Robert Rawlings and then a brilliant scissor kick from 20 yards by Makai Young to make it 2-1 to Social Club at the half.
Symonds scored his second goal of the match to pull Rangers level at 2-2 but they could not hang on for a point as Tuzo found the net in the closing minutes to give Social Club the points.
X-Roads remain a point behind after Antinori Butterfield netted both goals in their 2-0 win over Hamilton Parish at Wellington Oval. Butterfield scored his first after about three minutes and then made sure of the points with a second towards the end of the second half.
St George’s lost ground in third place when they could only manage a 1-1 draw against Wolves at Devonshire Recreation Club. The East Enders took the lead through Jarazinho Bassett in the seventh minute before Wolves were finally rewarded for their determination in the 53rd minute when defender George Dyer was knocked over inside the box and scored the penalty himself to equalise.
Kyle Tannock, the St George’s coach, was sent off the bench for comments made to referee Wendy Woodley regarding the penalty.
Eight players were booked in a tense match, four from each team.
At Southampton Oval, home side Paget Lions thumped bottom side Ireland Rangers 4-1. Dion Stovell bent the ball in from a tight angle to give Paget an early lead only for Rangers to equalise moments later after beating the offside trap.
McKario Burch put Pagert back in front with a header from a set pice just before the half. Jensen Rogers made it 3-1 midway through the second-half with another header before DeMarlo Curtis capped Paget’s comfortable win when he dribbled past two defenders in the box and slid the ball under the advancing goalkeeper.
The match between BAA and St David’s was postponed.
