Steede’s mixed emotions as Town turn corner

Kwame Steede was delighted with his second victory in four days as the new Dandy Town coach, but insists he did not get any extra pleasure in beating his former team Devonshire Cougars on his first return to Devonshire Recreation Club yesterday.

“No, that doesn’t matter, I came out here to do a job,” Steede stressed. “There was always going to be a feeling but that had to be suppressed. I came to do the work and the work was to get the points.”

Steede took over as head coach at Town from Jomar Wilkinson and ended his first month in charge with two wins after a draw and a loss.

Town, second from bottom and facing the threat of relegation as league champions, are desperate to start putting some wins on the board and may just have turned an important corner in their season after following up their midweek FA Cup replay triumph over Somerset Trojans with a 3-0 victory over Cougars.

It was only their second win in the league this season, following an astonishing eight losses in ten matches.

Yesterday, captain Angelo Simmons netted twice and substitute Jahtino Richardson-Martin the other as Town scored three late goals to seal the points and close the gap on the two teams immediately above them, Flanagan’s Onions and Somerset Eagles.

“If you look at it Cougars played a good defensive game and we had to be patient,” Steede said.

“Once we took our [first] chance it was a matter of us keep pushing. I thought we played a good patient game.

“Angelo’s got four [goals] in two [games], he’s putting the work in on the training field and is getting rewarded.

“He’s leading from the front and that’s what captains are supposed to do, lead.”

Steede, who played in midweek against Trojans, was an unused substitute as his team delivered against a Cougars team that sits fourth in the table.

“It’s something that I love, I like to coach,” he said. “I came here to play but I’m needed in a different capacity now.

“I feel good about it, in four games we have a draw a loss and two wins and we’re growing. The team believes in what we’re doing, myself and Andrew Bascome, and once they believe it makes it easier.

“The team has taken to us and it is showing. We’re getting strong and stronger as the games go on.

“If I’m needed I’ll play, but right now I don’t think I’m needed. We’re just taking it one game at a time.

“This game is out of the way and now we look to the next one.”

Town are home next weekend when they entertain Somerset Trojans who lost 1-0 at PHC Field as Zebras remained unbeaten in the league.

PHC top the table with 27 points while Robin Hood and North Village are tied on 26 in what looks to be a three-team title race.

Hood thrashed Onions 5-0 on Saturday night, while North Village beat bottom team Devonshire Colts 1-0 at Police Field. Boulevard beat Somerset Trojans 2-1 at White Hill Field.
