Lightbourne handed welcome problems
Bermuda will be at full strength for this month’s Concacaf Under-20 Championship in Costa Rica.
Kyle Lightbourne, the Bermuda Under-20 coach, has confirmed that all of the island’s key overseas players are available, including Bristol City Under-23 forward Osagi Bascome and Walsall midfielder Kacy Milan Butterfield.
“A lot of the players we are picking are overseas and all will be available for the trip,” Lightbourne said.
“I’m very encouraged because we’re going to have our full strength team to pick from.”
Several of the under-20 players featured in Bermuda’s 4-2 home defeat by Canada last month, including Bascome, Jahquil Hill, Ajai Daniels, Zenawi Bowen, Rai Sampson, Oneko Lowe and Keishon Bean.
On the bench were Mikiel Thomas, Azende Furbert and Jahkari Furbert who are also expected to be named in the under-20 squad, which has been seeded in group C along with the host nation, Trinidad and Tobago, and El Salvador.
Bermuda’s training squad is made up of 35 players which will be trimmed down to 20.
“At the moment we are having two sessions weekly with the players that are here on island and we are doing fitness more than anything else,” Lightbourne said. “We are going to trim the squad down and name them hopefully within the next day or two.
“Unfortunately we are going to have to break a few hearts because some players are going to be left behind. We also have to be careful in naming the squad because we know players have games for their clubs and if they get injured naming the squad can be tricky, so the replacements have to be taken into consideration.”
Bermuda’s team could include some players that did a great job covering for others who were unavailable for the Caribbean Football Union Under-20 Championship in Curaçao where Bermuda qualified for the Concacaf regional tournament.
“Some of the guys that came in when we went to Curaçao did such a good job that it’s made it difficult selection-wise,” Lightbourne said. “We’ll have take into consideration the work that they have done.”
The only injury concern at present is goalkeeper Detre Bell who fractured his arm in December.
“Unfortunately Detre fractured his arm over the Christmas break and we are monitoring his situation,” Lightbourne said. “We are going to try and give him every opportunity to recover.”
The squad depart on February 14 and will play a warm-up match against an undisclosed opponent in Miami before arriving in Costa Rica on February 17.
Bermuda begin their campaign on February 19 against Trinidad, who they beat 2-1 in a third-place play-off match at the CFU finals, before facing El Salvador on February 22 and host nation Costa Rica on February 25.
Up for grabs in Costa Rica are four spots for the Under-20 World Cup in South Korea from May 20 to June 11.
