Promotion race is not over yet, says Wells

In the thick of it: Nahki Wells

Nahki Wells has warned Newcastle United, the Sky Bet Championship leaders, that the promotion race is not over just yet.

Newcastle opened their lead at the top on Tuesday when they came from behind to beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1.

Now they face another crucial clash when they travel to Huddersfield Town today for a sold-out televised match to be shown on SportsMax at 1.30pm Bermuda time, with a win critical to the promotion aspirations of both teams.

A record league attendance at John Smith’s Stadium will see Huddersfield attempt to complete the double over Newcastle after their 2-1 victory at St James Park in August last year when Wells netted his first of the season.

Wells insists his side’s intensity and energy under David Wagner has been critical to the team’s success this season. They are third in the table, eight points behind Newcastle and six behind Brighton but with a game in hand on both.

“We know Newcastle are a free-flowing, free-scoring team,” Wells said. “They are top of the table for a reason. But at the same time we have our threats and our ways of trying to break them down.”

Wells has missed Huddersfield’s last two games with a leg injury but could be recalled for the vital encounter. Huddersfield made nine changes for the midweek FA Cup replay defeat against Manchester City, leaving Wells on the bench, possibly to have him ready for today’s match.

“I’m pretty sure they will come here realising that this is one of the toughest places to go at the moment with our home record,” Wells said.

“We focus on ourselves and I promise you, that doesn’t change if we’re playing Rotherham or Newcastle. If we are on it collectively and if we take on the manager’s instructions we have a right chance of beating Newcastle.

“Our manager has got the balance right, working hard in training and preparing for a Saturday. He came into the club and changed everything. The level of training has been stepped up phenomenally this season.”
