Ruthless X-Roads leapfrog Social Club
Young Men’s Social Club suffered their first league defeat and relinquished top spot in the First Division after St George’s Colts handed them a 2-1 defeat at Wellington Oval yesterday.
Social Club’s first loss came a week after they clinched promotion along with X-Roads, but the First Division title remains up for grabs with two matches remaining, with X-Roads now leading by a point after their 6-0 thrashing of Ireland Rangers.
Clay Darrell gave Social Club the lead early in the first half but Donavan Thompson equalised for the home team just before half-time.
Jarazinho Bassett scored the winner in the second half. In their first meeting Social Club and St George’s shared the points at PHC Field.
X-Roads capitalised on Social Club’s loss as Jorge Sanchez and Paul Simons both netted twice against Ireland Rangers at Garrison Field, while Tyquan Perinchief and Antinari Butterfield added to the scoring.
X-Roads now lead Social Club with games against Wolves and Paget Lions remaining. Social Club have to play St David’s and Ireland Rangers.
“I wasn’t surprised [at Social Club’s loss], I was expecting it,” Farid El Karfa, the X-Roads coach, said.
“Playing against St George’s lately I saw the strength in their team, they are difficult to beat, so I expected them to get three points against Social Club. It wasn’t a surprise to me.”
In yesterday’s other second-tier, fourth-place St David’s and sixth-place Paget drew 1-1 at Lord’s, with Dion Stovell giving Paget the lead from the penalty spot and Marcus Proctor equalising for the home team.
Eighth-place Wolves are within a point of Southampton Rangers, one place above them, after a 3-1 at the Southampton Oval, while fifth-place BAA defeated ninth-place Hamilton Parish 4-1 at Goose Gosling Field on Saturday night.
