Messi still a god ... even when off form

Hit for six: Neymar looks to the skies as team-mate Sergio Busquets celebrates their side’s stunning comeback against Paris-Saint Germain in the Champions League at the Nou Camp (Photograph by Manu Fernandez/AP)

First up a disclaimer: I missed Barcelona’s Champions League comeback, which I have been told was the greatest since records began.

Or, in more relatable terms, since Andrés Iniesta misplaced a pass, or Arsène Wenger looked like he was enjoying his job.

However, having watched the highlights and absorbed a Twitter tsunami of opinions on the 6-1 victory, I have concluded that I wouldn’t have learnt anything new had I tuned in.

The Catalans are still packed with world-class talent capable of destroying anyone.

Luis Suárez still cheats.

PSG are still bottle jobs.

Nou Camp is still the perfect football amphitheatre.

And Lionel Messi is still a football god ... even when he’s off form.

To be honest, I imagine the majority of Royal Gazette fantasy managers would have sacked off the Champions League this week in order to work out how the first-time volley they are going to get a team out this Game Week.

Unless you’re super prepared, you will — like me — have suddenly realised that Costa, Kane and Courtois won’t cut it this weekend, what with the FA Cup jostling for schedule space.

It’s going to take a turnaround of Barcelona proportions. So there’s still hope.

11am kick-offs unless stated

Tomorrow

Bournemouth v West Ham

Bournemouth managed to stop the rot with an excellent point at Old Trafford, even if they had to smack Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the head to get it.

With Andrew Surman and Tyrone Mings now out suspended, the home side will do well to repeat such a good all-round defensive performance.

Prediction: 1-2

Everton v WBA

Romelu Lukaku takes on his former club with Everton on a four-game winning run.

Both teams will have an eye on a potential Europa League place but the Goodison Park factor should give Ronald Koeman’s side the edge.

Prediction: 2-0

Hull City v Swansea City

Hull have not won in three but this is a relegation humdinger.

Paul Clement at Swansea has organised the defence and got Fernando Llorente scoring again, mainly by ensuring the wingers actually cross the ball.

Nervous tension will be the winner, though.

Prediction: 1-1

Sunday

Liverpool v Burnley

1pm

While Liverpool’s record against the so-called lesser teams has been their Achilles’ heel this season, it’s hard to back against them.

Burnley beat them at Turf Moor, a fact that will surely work Jürgen Klopp up into a jaw-clicking pre-match frenzy. Plus, of course, there’s the minor fact that Burnley haven’t won away all season.

Prediction: 3-1
