St George’s and X-Roads target prized scalps
The FA Cup has not been kind to East End teams since Wellington Rovers became the third winners of the competition in 1958.
However, First Division sides St George’s Colts and X-Roads will be hoping for further success against top-flight teams in the quarter-finals this weekend.
X-Roads welcome Dandy Town to Garrison Field, a venue unfamiliar to many of Town’s players, while St George’s travel to PHC Field to take on Zebras — the competition’s most successful team with 11 titles.
X-Roads and St George’s knocked out Premier Division opposition in the previous round when they caused big upsets with 4-2 and 6-2 wins over Devonshire Colts and Boulevard.
“It’s about being humble, we can’t focus on what we did before, we have to focus on what we’re trying to achieve in the game against PHC,” Kyle Williams, the St George’s coach, said.
“We know PHC are a good team with a very good coach. We have a game plan and we’re working on that and trying to stay disciplined.
“I believe in my squad and if they stay disciplined they can achieve positive results. A win would be good for the community down here.”
In Donavan Thompson, who scored four goals against Boulevard, St George’s have the division’s top scorer (17 goals) and he will be key in their attack along with Jahron Dickinson, Jarazinho Bassett and Allan Douglas.
Thompson has netted ten goals in his last three league games against former team Hamilton Parish, Southampton Rangers and Young Men’s Social Club.
“Donavan is a special player, still young, and I feel he’s the best striker in Bermuda,” Williams said of the 22-year-old.
St George’s have missed out on another promotion bid but a strong cup run would be a good way for them to end the season. They have reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup on a few occasions but have never reached the final.
“The promotion thing was disappointing but it’s still a project and you can’t expect to make it work in one or two years,” Williams said.
“The problem was at the beginning of the season we weren’t scoring as many goals as we did in the second half of the season. It’s a lesson learnt for the team, and me as the coach.
“The most consistent teams for the season have been X-Roads and Social Club. No complaints from me.”
It is because of St George’s win over previously unbeaten Social Club that X-Roads are top of the table. Their coach, Farid El Karfa, said that promotion was always their top priority.
X-Roads face a Town team who are unbeaten in six league and cup games.
“We are aware we are playing an opponent with quality, but we are ready, mentally, physically and tactically,” El Karfa said.
“I think the team that shows up on the day, is organised and wants it the most is going to stand a chance.
“Obviously it was not our top priority this season, the FA Cup, but if something comes out of it that will be a good bonus. We are up for the challenge.”
X-Roads will also use the match to gauge themselves against an opponent they will face next season.
“It’ll be a good early test for us,” El Karfa said. “I still don’t believe the gap is too big between some First Division teams and the Premier Division sides.
“Any team that shows up with character, a good fighting spirit and is organised tactically can stand a chance.”
Cup holders Robin Hood start the weekend action off with a match against BAA at Goose Gosling Field tomorrow at 9pm.
BAA are the first winners of the FA Cup (1956) but this will be their biggest test of the season.
North Village and Devonshire Cougars will meet at Bernard Park for the second straight weekend on Sunday.
Cougars are the most successful cup team this season, having already won the Friendship Trophy and Dudley Eve Trophy.
