Wells keeps hopes high of unseating top two
Huddersfield Town ace Nahki Wells believes that the Yorkshire club’s Sky Bet Championship title bid remains on track.
Huddersfield are third in the Championship, nine points adrift of leaders Newcastle United, with a game in hand. Rafael Benítez’s side were joined on 77 points last night by Brighton & Hove Albion, who beat Derby County 3-0.
“Each week the reality is that it’s becoming closer and closer,” Wells said. “The more points we pick up, the more opportunity we give ourselves of being in the play-offs guaranteed.
“It’s still not mathematically happened, so we wouldn’t take our foot off the pedal, but also we’re still confident we can win the league or get second.
“That’s something that’s never going to stop driving us on until mathematically that can’t happen.”
Huddersfield’s promotion bid suffered a setback after losing to Newcastle at home a week ago. But Wells and his team-mates quickly shrugged off the defeat, courtesy of a 1-0 home triumph over Aston Villa three days later at the John Smith’s Stadium. “Tuesday’s win was massive on the back of a defeat against the top boys,” Wells said.
“It was important we bounced back in the right manner, which the head coach emphasised. You’re going to have defeats, so what is important is how you bounce back; those are the real statements.
“Villa were in good form before we beat them and they could have always been a banana skin. They came and made it difficult for us, and we may have been a bit lucky in the grand scheme of things. But at home we always fancy ourselves to score and we defended well to get the win.”
Huddersfield will now look to maintain their winning ways away to mid-table Brentford today.
David Wagner’s team are the favourites going into the clash; however, Wells is not taking anything for granted.
“Every game’s difficult at this level,” the former Dandy Town player said. “We haven’t really been able to wipe teams away like we wanted to.
“But sometimes if you’re going to win 1-0, it’s not a bad way to win, and hopefully we can continue this weekend.”
