Nahki Wells said he would be happy to thrash out a new contract at Huddersfield Town this summer, but first he wants to concentrate on gaining promotion with the club.

Wells has his sights set on becoming the third Bermudian, after Kyle Lightbourne and Shaun Goater, to play in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old has a chance of achieving that with Huddersfield — the surprise packages of the Sky Bet Championship this season — who sit six points behind joint leaders Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion with a game in hand.

Wells recently turned down a new contract offer at Huddersfield, but insists he is open to remaining at the John Smith’s Stadium beyond this season.

“I’m contracted for another 17 to 18 months,” Wells told The Huddersfield Daily Examiner.

“My heart’s here, my mindset’s here. I don’t think I could explain how much more excited I could be about the next three or four months because as I said from day one our dream is to play in the Premier League.

“And what better opportunity would it be to go up with this side and dedicate my future to Huddersfield long term. But right now is the wrong time to focus on that.

“It would just be a distraction to what we have going on as a unit. When we get to the summer we will sit down and go over things again.”

Newcastle had opened a 11-point gap over Huddersfield after beating them 3-1, but a draw away to Reading and a defeat at home to Fulham last weekend meant that Newcastle’s lead over Huddersfield is just six points with ten games to go.

“Each week the reality is it is becoming closer and closer,” said Wells, whose team are 11 points ahead of seventh-place Fulham. “The more points we pick up the more opportunities we give ourselves to be in the play-offs, guaranteed.

“It still hasn’t mathematically happened so we won’t take our foot off the pedal. Also, we are still confident we can win the league or get second. That’s never going to stop until mathematically it can’t happen. Brighton and Newcastle are in front of us but in two games that can completely change. We are keeping an eye out for their results but at the same time our emphasis is on us winning.

“Every game is difficult at this level. Winning 1-0 is not a bad way to win and hopefully it can continue this weekend.”

Huddersfield are in action on Friday when they travel to relegation-threatened Bristol City. Brighton are away to Leeds United and Newcastle travel to Birmingham City the following day. Huddersfield’s game in hand will not be played until Tuesday, April 25, when they are away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

n All Premier Division matches have been called off this weekend because of the exhibition match between Bermuda and the New York Cosmos on Sunday at the National Stadium. First Division games will go ahead as scheduled.

Relegation-threatened Devonshire Colts can have their fate sealed tonight when they take on Dandy Town in a make-up match at Goose Gosling Field at 9pm. Colts are nine points from safety with three games remaining, while Somerset Eagles (12) and Flanagan’s Onions (13) have two games left. In the rearranged matches, Colts face Somerset Trojans at Goose Gosling Field next Tuesday.

On Saturday, March 25, leaders Robin Hood will play Somerset Eagles at Goose Gosling Field at 9pm, while Devonshire Cougars face Boulevard the following day at Devonshire Recreation Club at 5pm.

Town’s match with Onions will be played on Tuesday, March 28 at Goose Gosling Field, with North Village taking on PHC the following day, also at Goose Gosling Field.

The final round of league matches will be played on Sunday, April 2.

n Robin Hood have been awarded a 3-0 win in their away match to Somerset Trojans on March 4.

The game was abandoned in the 87th minute with Hood leading 3-0 after a mêlée ensued after two played were sent off.
