Nesbeth hits six as Bermuda run riot
Bermuda coach Naquita Robinson praised her team after they ended the Concacaf Caribbean Women’s Under-17 qualifiers in St Lucia on Saturday with a 13-1 victory over Aruba.
LeiLanni Nesbeth netted six goals to finish as the tournament’s highest scorer with nine goals as Bermuda made it three wins out of three in group C, where they also beat hosts St Lucia and Antigua.
Bermuda netted 21 goals and conceded just one to advance to the next round of qualifying matches in Haiti this year.
“Yes, a very good, confident performance heading into the next round,” Robinson said.
“After the Antigua game assistant coach Vance [Brown] and I sat down and assessed what needed to be improved and then put together a training session that would enable the girls to perform as they did.”
As well as Nesbeth’s double hat-trick, Jaden Masters scored a hat-trick of her own while Tianna Mullen netted twice and Katelyn Madeiros and Nia Christopher one each.
“LeiLanni was outstanding and played her role extremely well,” the coach noted. “Even when we brought on the young Katelyn Madeiros we gave her [Nesbeth] specific instructions and LeiLanni carried them out to perfection.
“Jaden Masters was also phenomenal and was dubbed by most of the fans from St Lucia as the player of group C.
“Nia Christopher also stood out but, as it goes sometimes, she did everything right but only scored once.
“She hit the crossbar four times, which disappointed her, but she played fantastic.
“We picked up an injury, with Megan Titterton aggravating her hip flexor, and we were forced to drop Trinae Edwards into the centre-back position. She brings aggression and has learnt how to read the game and create opportunities going forward.”
Robinson added: “Overall we are very pleased with the team and we are looking forward to the next round. The travelling staff have been phenomenal and none of this would have been possible without Vance Brown, the assistant coach, manager Charyse Bean, Fiona Braidwood, our physiotherapist, and our fearless leader Manny Faria, the head of delegation.
“Thank you to the parents and a special thank you to the Bermuda Football Association for their continued support.”
