Trott back in England squad

Trott has been called up by Keith Downing again

Nathan Trott has been named in the England Under-20 squad for friendlies against Italy and Czech Republic next month.

The West Ham United goalkeeper has been included in Keith Downing’s 21-man squad that has undergone three changes from the one that played against Holland and Switzerland this month.

Trott is among a trio of goalkeepers named in the squad, which also includes Bournemouth’s Aaron Ramsdale and Swindon Town’s Will Henry, who is presently on loan at Dunstable Town.

Among the new faces are Milton Keynes Dons defender Callum Brittain, Bournemouth midfielder Connor Mahoney and Henry who Downing has called upon to join his squad for the first time.

Mahoney, the former Accrington Stanley and Blackburn Rovers playmaker, has been capped previously for the England Under-17 and Under-18s.

The England Under-20s will travel to Gorgonzola to face the Azzurri on October 5 and then return to St George’s Park for their second game of the international week against the Czechs on October 10.

Trott kept a clean sheet on his England Under-20 debut in a 3-0 shut out win away to Holland during the previous Fifa international break.

“Unreal, waited a year for it, didn’t feel real for the first 20 minutes,” Trott told The Royal Gazette after earning his first cap for England. “It’s always a good feeling to get called up for England, currently the best team in Europe in our age group so it’s an honour.”

The former BAA and Bermuda Under-17 player was a part of the England Under-19 squad that won this summer’s Uefa European Championship in Georgia after beating Portugal 2-1 in the final. He was an unused substitute throughout the tournament, but played his part on the training pitch, his inclusion in Downing’s squad arriving just months after switching his international allegiance from Bermuda to England.

England Under-20 were held to a goalless draw away to Switzerland in the previous outing earlier this month, with Trott an unused substitute and among nine changes Downing made from the squad that beat Holland.
