Demanding more: Village coach Devarr Boyles

Devarr Boyles, the North Village coach, has urged his players to be more ruthless in big games.

Village lost 2-0 to PHC Zebras in the Friendship Trophy final at Wellington Oval on New Year’s Day and are still searching for a first cup title in six seasons.

“It’s always encouraging to reach a final and we are thankful, said Boyles, who has opted to step down as coach when his contract expires at the end of the season. “But that’s not good enough for us so we have to do a little bit more.”

Second-half goals from Marco Warren and Daren Usher put paid to Village’s hopes of a record twelfth Friendship Trophy title as Zebras joined them and Somerset Trojans on 11 wins.

Village were the first team to win the competition after beating now defunct Wellington Rovers 1-0 in the inaugural final in 1965-66. The New Year’s Day defeat was Village’s second straight cup final defeat to Zebras in nine months, having also lost to Scott Morton’s team in last season’s FA Cup final.

“This is two finals now where we have come up short, so we are hoping that we can get to a third final and do something,” said Boyles, a former Bermuda caretaker coach. “That’s what it’s all about: trying to win a cup for North Village.”

Village travel to Lord’s tomorrow to face Boulevard in the Premier Division.

Boyles’s team are fifth in the table, level on points with Dandy Town, and seven adrift of unbeaten leaders PHC.

Somerset Trojans are at home to Young Men’s Social Club at Somerset Cricket Club tonight at 8pm. Young Men’s Social Club held Trojans to a draw in the first league meeting between the two sides at Police Field to earn a point from their first match in the top flight in four decades.
