Plans to replace floodlights at Cougars

The Dudley Eve semi-finals next week have been switched from Devonshire Recreation Club to Goose Gosling Field.

The matches were tentatively scheduled by the Bermuda Football Association for Devonshire Rec on November 1.

However, it has been more than two years since the ground staged a night match, in the second half of the 2015-16 season.

Nadine Henry, the president of Devonshire Rec, confirmed yesterday that plans are to replace the whole lighting system which was damaged by two hurricanes in 2016.

“We’ve been doing an assessment since 2016, we’re very clear on what has to be done and it will be a full revamping,” Henry said.

“We’re not in the business of touch and go any more, throwing in a light or fixing a pole, we’re going for a full refurbishment of our lighting system.

“It will be the entire campus, not just the field but our yard as well, because we have Bingo on a weekly basis. We’re looking for something that covers everything, football and security. We are definitely closer and I look for this to be done in the next couple of years because I intend to begin handing over to some new blood.”

Henry has served on management at Devonshire Rec for almost a decade, taking over as president just before the team winning the Triple Crown in 2012-13.

“I’ve done five years as president, so it’s definitely time for new blood,” she said.

“That’s one of the projects I want to ensure is done before I go. We wanted to stop throwing good money at bad; it didn’t make any sense doing that. We’ve burnt our mortgage, so we are spending very responsibly.”

Another female executive at the club, Kim Richards, the vice-president, was elected as treasurer of the Bermuda Football Association last month after being nominated by her president. Richards replaced James Davis when she was voted in at the BFA’s Annual Congress.

The semi-final double-header will pit Robin Hood against North Village in the 7pm match before holders PHC Zebras take on Somerset Trojans.

The winners will meet in the final on November 11 at a venue yet to be confirmed.

Goose Gosling Field and Somerset Cricket Club are the only two venues hosting night matches. PHC Stadium last held a night match in February 1997, the year before their old ground closed. PHC Field reopened in January 2015.
