Village out to reignite title challenge
North Village will be determined to get their Premier Division title bid back on track when they host champions PHC at Bernard Park tomorrow.
Kenny Thompson’s team suffered their first league loss of the season in a make-up league match against Robin Hood at Goose Gosling Field on Wednesday.
The result vaulted John Barry Nusum’s team to the top of the standings on goal difference over second-place Village but with a match in hand, both clubs having amassed 19 points.
Village are the favourites going into the match as PHC have been a shadow of their former dominant selves so far this campaign.
Yet, despite PHC’s gradual fall from grace, Randy Spence, the Village assistant coach, will not be taking the visitors for granted.
“We don’t want to underestimate PHC because they are still a good team and are coming with a hard work ethic,” Spence said, standing in for head coach Thompson, who is off island.
“They are going to come and run and we have to be disciplined, keep shape and be able to keep our game intensified as well.
“We have to stay confident, put our best foot forward and give it 110 per cent and let the chips fall where they fall.”
Village’s title bid hit a bump in the road after their defeat to Hood, but Spence remained positive about his side’s showing.
“I felt we played a pretty good game,” Spence added. “We had a few mental lapses, which we’re trying to minimise, but overall I was pleased with the work ethic of the players.
“We just need to be more clinical around the goalmouth because on any given day, whether you play good or bad, it comes down to scoring goals.”
Likewise, champions PHC will also be keen to get back to winning ways having suffered a humbling 6-0 home defeat against Hood in their previous league outing last month.
Robert Wilson’s team have struggled with consistency this season with their title hopes now appearing slim at best given the seven-point gap between themselves and the lead pack.
Leaders Hood host unpredictable Somerset Eagles at Goose Gosling Field.
Like their hosts, the visitors are also going into the match with momentum having eliminated Dandy Town in a high-scoring Friendship Trophy quarter-final match in their previous outing.
However, they will certainly have their work cut out for them as Hood appear to hitting top stride and are at full strength with some of their key players back from Concacaf Nations League duty with the national squad.
Elsewhere tomorrow fourth-place Devonshire Cougars travel to Garrison Field to face sixth-place X-Roads who trail the visitors in the standings by a point heading into the clash.
The remaining Premier Division match will see bottom-dwellers Somerset Trojans and Boulevard do battle at Somerset Cricket Club today, starting at 3pm.
Boulevard have yet to earn a point and have only scored one goal while conceding 17 in their eight league outings to date.
Dennis Brown’s Somerset team are gradually finding their footing following a slow start and are just one point shy of eighth-place Eagles and more importantly safety from relegation.
Meanwhile, tomorrow’s First Division matches will see leaders St George’s travel to Bernard Park to face Vasco, Hamilton Parish host St David’s at Wellington Oval, while Young Men’s Social Club and Ireland Rangers locking horns at BFA Field.
Flanagans host Wolves at Goose Gosling Field today (9pm) while second-place Devonshire Colts have a bye.
