Warwick Archers Bows successfully defended their DeRoza-Holder under-15 title by edging out PHC Zebras 1-0 in the final last night at Goose Gosling Field.PHC controlled the early stages, creating a chance from a free-kick, which was driven wide of the far post. Both sides pressed high when out of possession, and PHC nearly found the opening goal, but their striker hit the post from distance in the 26th minute.Archers took charge of the remainder of the first half, knocking the ball around nicely and trying to create chances. They found the opening goal from a set-piece, a free kick which was drilled off the crossbar and in by midfielder Adrian Trott with five minutes remaining in the first half.Warwick held on to go into the break ahead.Archers should have doubled their lead early in the second half, but Andre Mussenden drove his shot high and wide of the near post. They created another clear chance a few minutes later but James Luckham spurned the opportunity. At this stage, Archers looked far the more likely to add to their tally. In the final stages, PHC created a couple of clear chances to draw level. The first one fell to Antonio Wade, but goalkeeper Matteo Holder made a comfortable save. The second which came in the final moments of the game, saw a powerful shot by Marco Scott smash off the crossbar before being cleared by the Archers defence.Despite the late pressure, Archers managed to hold firm, retaining possession in the closing moments to secure the slender victory and successfully defend the Deroza-Holder Under-15 Cup.Warwick Archers Bows assistant coach Richard Todd paid tribute to his team’s endeavours as a unit in retaining their crown.“I thought it was a good collective effort,” he said. “I knew it would be a tight game against PHC because every time we have faced them this season, it has been close. “We came in with a plan to defend from the front, which I thought we did well, particularly in the first half and it was a great strike by Adrian Trott. “Defensively, we remained solid while we created chances. We were unlucky not to have scored more goals, but overall it was a good collective effort.”
