Smith-DeShields and Lee on target for Village

Devonshire Cougars 0 North Village 2First-half goals from Jaizel Smith-DeShields and Jason Lee were sufficient for North Village Rams to comfortably sweep past arch rivals Devonshire Cougars in this FA Cup fixture at Devonshire Recreation Club yesterday.“We’re happy to be in the quarter-finals’, said a satisfied Village coach Kenny Thompson. “We just played them last week in the league, so some of the preparation was already done. We had to get the players in the right mindset, as Cougars are a quality team. We took a while to get into the rhythm, but once we did, we gained control of the game.”The Rams gave their opponents a rude awakening as early as the second minute when centre half Darius Cox took too long to clear and allowed Smith-DeShields to nip in and steal the ball from him before beating Cougars goalkeeper Kioshi Trott with a low shot.Village goalkeeper Detre Bell almost gifted Cougars the equaliser a minute later when he was dispossessed from a back-pass when under pressure, but Allan Douglas’s shot was too weak and the Village defence recovered. Douglas was tormenting the Village defence in the early stages and nearly scored again with a firm header from a corner, but a Village defender was able to clear off the line. Then he attempted to redirect a ball from a cross towards goal with a flick, but this was no threat to Bell. Village winger Jarreau Daniels created the second goal in the 41st minute when he was unnecessarily brought down by defender Juma Mouchette as he cut inside the penalty area from the byline. Jason Lee stepped up and planted his spot-kick to the left of the diving Trott. Cougars made two changes early in the second half, bringing on Drewonde Bascome and Jahzande Samuels. This appeared to give them some life, with Samuels making a dangerous run down the middle before being dispossessed, and then Bascome slamming over the top under pressure from Bell. Bascome should have scored in the 83rd minute after a three-player combination that involved captain Zari Simmons and Douglas put him through with only the goalkeeper. But he shot straight at Bell, whose clean sheet was duly protected when in the late stages when he dived to his right to make a brilliant one-handed save to deny a Bascome free kick from 22 yards.SCORERSNorth Village Rams: Smith-DeShields 2, Lee 41TEAMSDevonshire Cougars (4-2-3-1): K Trott — J Mouchette, D Cox, C Maybury, Z White — Z Simmons, J Fox — S Pearman (sub: N Carmichael, 67min), N Simmons (sub: J Samuels, 67), K Durrant (sub: D Bascome, 58) — A Douglas.
