Best is yet to come from Thompson

Donavan Thompson, the X-Roads forward, believes the best is yet to come from he and his fellow team-mates.

The Premier Division side received a massive confidence boost after coming from behind to hold champions North Village to a 2-2 draw at Bernard Park on Sunday and earn their first point of the season.

X-Roads trailed 2-0 with 15 minutes of regulation time remaining before Thompson and Paul Simons, the deputising captain, scored within the space of two minutes to rescue a hard-earned point for the visitors.

“Those were very important goals because we are off the mark,” Thompson said.

“We guys are fighters and we never give up. We always fight on and 2-0 means nothing to us.

“We will always try and fight back and I even thought we could have won this game.”

The champions led 2-0 on Jaizel Smith-DeShields’s first-half brace and were well on course until Thompson and Simons pounced to turn the match on its head.

X-Roads suffered shutout losses in their first three league matches of the season — against Dandy Town, Southampton Rangers and Devonshire Cougars — before finally stopping the rot against Village.

Thompson says he and his team-mates are improving with each passing game.

“This [draw with Village] just shows us what we can do, so it’s a confidence boost,” he added.

“We have been shaky in the beginning, but now we are starting to find ourselves.

“We have been very unfortunate but the results are getting better and better as we’ve gone on, so it’s just a progression for us.

“Things are looking good and it’s just the beginning.”

The 25-year-old forward is relieved to have finally opened his and his team’s goal account for the season.

“We played three games and hadn’t scored a goal in any of them,” he said. “To be the first to score for the team is a big relief because I’m the leading goalscorer and these guys are expecting me to score.

“I am happy to get off the mark, but I owe it all to the team. I’m doing this for the team; my goals mean nothing without these guys.

“Big thanks to the coaching staff, fans and X Roads team for backing me and helping me. Even when I wasn’t scoring, they still pushed and pushed for me to get there, and I finally got there.”

Thompson demonstrated his versatility, having played out on the flank rather than in his customary role as a striker.

“I just do whatever the coach asks,” he said.

“I am the skipper of the team, even though Paul [Simons] had it today [Sunday]. I just try and set an example and if he [coach Kameron Fox] wants me out wide, then I’ll play out wide.”
