Rain wins the day at Goose Gosling
Dandy Town 0 St George’s Colts 0
(abnd 83min, waterlogged pitch))
A steady downpour of rain in the second half of this match turned the artificial pitch at Goose Gosling Field into a swimming pool, causing referee Garic Swainson to abandon play after consultation with match commissioner Kuhn Evans.
The game started balanced with both teams nearly scoring in the opening minutes. Town captain Angelo Simmons threaded a pass to Cecoy Robinson, who laid off for Jahnazae Swan to shoot, but goalkeeper Freddy Hall was equal to the task and pushed the ball around a post for a corner. At the other end, Town defender Ernest Trott lost possession deep in his penalty area, but Macai Simmons mis-hit his shot from six yards.
Midway through the half, Town should have scored when David Blankendal was upended in the box by Phillip Anderson, but Simmons’s penalty was easily saved by goalkeeper Hall diving to his left.
Minutes later, St George’s should have taken the lead when Hall’s long kick forward was misjudged by Town goalkeeper Jaiden Manders, allowing Clay Darrell to outjump him. The ball fell to Kontai Burton with the goalkeeper stranded. He elected to do a spectacular flying kick when a simple side-footer would have been sufficient and the ball sliced off his boot to be easily cleared.
St George’s had the clearer chances to score but neither team could breach the net before the half.
Just before the abandonment, David Signor dispossessed a Town defender before striking a screamer inches over the top, then Robinson hit a rebound from a blocked Swan shot inches wide. Soon after, the pitch became waterlogged, making it impossible to continue. Both teams now await the ruling of the Bermuda Football Association.
