Ten-man Somerset Trojans needed extra time to subdue Young Men’s Social Club and proceed to the semi-finals of the Friendship Trophy at PHC last night.

It was an eventful first match of the season for Trojans defender Tai Cariah, as he scored an own goal, before he was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Haile Eve struck twice for Trojans, with the winner scored by substitute Enrique Mendes. This was after another substitute, Jomeko Mallory had equalised for Social Club four minutes before the end of regulation time.

Trojans were the better team in the early stages of the game, and they made that count in the eighteenth minute, when a long clearance by goalkeeper Nkenge Durham resulted in Eve’s first goal, Kee-Zai Cann providing the final pass.

Eve had his second goal three minutes later, Cann with yet another assist. Just as Trojans thought they were safe, Cariah beat his own goalkeeper in the 31st minute to pull one back for Social Club.

Having been booked in the first half, Cariah, back on the island from school in the United States, was sent off in the 63rd minute for a second bookable offence.

Being reduced to ten players saw Trojans coach Jensen Rogers forced to adjust his approach, as he tried to keep the one goal advantage.

Social Club kept fighting and they finally found he equaliser in the 86th minute, Mallory bundling the ball in from a corner kick.

A brilliant move from the back resulted in the winner for Trojans with ten minutes left in extra time, when they quickly turned defence into attack. Mendes received a long pass, beat the goalkeeper and had the easiest task of slotting into an unguarded goal.

In the earlier First Division Shield quarter-final match, Boulevard Blazers hammered Ireland Island Rangers 5-0.

Ian Coke scored a double for Boulevard, while the other goals came from Sanchey Grant, Antoine Famous and Khiry Easton.
