Daion Swan-DeSilva is making waves in St Kitts

Daion Swan-DeSilva is catching the attention of all the right people as he represents Bermuda at the Concacaf Under-20 Championship Qualifier in St Kitts & Nevis.

The 17-year-old North Village midfield ace has more than held his own on the pitch, with his talents prompting much discussion along the sidelines by spectators and opposing scouts in attendance at Bermuda’s group F matches against Grenada and Martinique.

“It's a great feeling to represent your country, a great feeling to put the shirt on, and you just want to give it your all every time you step out and represent,” a proud Swan-DeSilva told The Royal Gazette.

“It's international football so you are playing everybody from all around the world. You just want to play as a team and then show off your individual talent, and I think the transition to this level for me has not been bad.”

The teenager came off the bench during the 2-1 win over Grenada in Bermuda’s opening group F match and was one of four changes coach made by coach Cecoy Robinson to his starting XI in a 2-1 loss to Martinique on Monday.

“I feel this group is really strong and surprised we actually got that result [loss to Martinique],” he added. “I feel that this team can really go far.”

“Obviously it was a hard loss to take and all we can do is learn from it and go again on Wednesday hopefully to get the three points off Jamaica,” Swan-DeSilva said.

The Gombey Warriors must win their remaining group match and rely on other results to go their way if they are to qualify for the Concacaf Under-20 Championship but Swan-DeSilva is in no doubts that Bermuda have what it takes to cause an upset against Jamaica.

“You always want to have that belief that it's not over until it's over, so we go again on Wednesday,” he added.

“It's Jamaica and previous teams have done well, but we are coming to give it a fight. I feel it can only get better. There's a lot of things to learn from, to take in, experience and just build.”

Swan-DeSilva has also impressed orchestrating the midfield in his debut season with Village after joining the Pembroke club from Premier Division rivals Somerset Trojans at the beginning of the season.

“It’s been great,” Swan-DeSilva said. I feel that I am a key player to the team so I have to bring my talent and then show it in my games.”

Village trail Premier Division leaders PHC Zebras by three points with four games remaining and are also through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup as they attempt to successfully defend that trophy.

Kenny Thompson’s team will take on Devonshire Cougars in the first FA Cup semi-final on March 6 before hosting Zebras in the league at Bernard Park ten days later in a contest that will have a strong bearing on deciding the title race.

If all goes accordingly, Swan-DeSilva hopes to cap off his debut season at Village with some silverware.

“Hopefully we can claim those two trophies that are left,” he added.

“We are still fighting for the league and the FA Cup, so once I go back home I just want to bring that extra push to the team and then go from there."
