PHC aiming to pile the pressure on title rivals Village

PHC will be aiming to get their Premier Division title aspirations back on track when they face Paget at Southampton Oval this afternoon.

Quincy Hunt’s side had goalkeeper Quinaceo Hunt to thank for saving Samario Valasse-Paul’s penalty as they managed to escape with a point against Hamilton Parish last week.

The result saw PHC’s lead at the top cut to just a point following North Village’s 3-0 victory over Paget.

Victory for PHC will open the gap between them and Village to four points before the latter take to the field against Young Men’s Social Club at Police Field tomorrow.

“Sunday’s league match is very important,’’ said Village head coach Kenny Thompson.

“There are no easy matches in this league, every positive result has to be earned.

“We’re at the stage of the season exactly where we want to be, playing important matches.

“Every match is important at this time, so we’re relishing these matches and fully focused.”

Meanwhile, X-Roads will be relegated if they do not pick up maximum points against Dandy Town at Goose Gosling Field this evening.

Ralph Bean Jr’s side showed some fighting spirit in a 4-4 draw with Cougars last Friday. With nine points to play for, X-Roads can finish on the same points as Social Club, provided the latter lose all their remaining matches, but even if that were to happen, X-Roads will still go down because of an inferior goal difference.

Parish have a chance to push for a top-four spot when they meet Trojans at Wellington Oval tomorrow.

Sergio Goater, the Parish coach, while excited that his team’s three matches are against sides lower than them on the standings, acknowledged that their opponents are also fighting for survival.

“Our last three games are against teams at the bottom,’’ Goater said after the stalemate with PHC.

“I have to motivate my players to get in a mindset to play teams below us, and it’s difficult.

“Remember these teams are fighting for points, they’re trying to stay in the league.”

Cougars, with a seven-point cushion in third position, meet a fired-up St George’s Colts side that has just booked a spot in the FA Cup final. In addition to seeking FA Cup glory, Jarreau Hayward’s men are also in contention for a respectable top-four finish.

In the First Division, the Bermuda Football Association’s competitions committee has confirmed that the rescheduled match between Vasco and Robin Hood is taking place tomorrow at GGF, with kick-off set for 4pm.

Hood are seeking to join Devonshire Colts in earning promotion to the Premier Division.
