Bermuda football teams reach semi-finals at Island Games

Bermuda’s football teams remained unbeaten to make it into the semi-finals on day three of the Island Games.

Jai Bean, Enrique Russell and Blaiz Hall scored for the men’s under-23 side in a hard-fought 3-2 win over Greenland to win Group Three with nine points. The John Nusum-coached have been impressive as they scored twelve goals, with their defence only breached three times.

Not to be outdone by their male counterparts, the women’s senior team defeated Aland 2-0, with Trinae Edwards and Ashley Tutas scoring to ensure they make it into the semi-finals as the winners of Group One.

Bernard Wade continued his good form by finishing second in the preliminary round of the men’s 720 recurve..

Wade, who secured a silve medal at the Games on Monday, scored 300 with his first 36 arrows and 277 points with his next 36 shots to finish second with a total of 577 points, fifteen fewer than the winner, Daniele Rolfi of Aland.

Tenth seed James Finnigan defeated Marcus Thomas of Guernsey 6-1, 6-1 to book his spot in the quarterfinals of the men’s singles tennis. Scott Redmond lost 6-1, 6-4 to Callum Theaker, of the Cayman Islands, in the round of 16.

Shelby Madeiros, the seventh seed, saw off Ewa Bielanowicz, of Gibraltar, 6-3, 6-3 to make it to the last eight in the women’s singles, in which she will face Ffion Fletcher, of the Cayman Islands.

In the mixed doubles round of 16, David Thomas and Victoria Stephens lost 3-6, 7-5 and 10-6 to Isle of Man duo Marc Chinn and Karen Faragher, while Gavin Manders and Madeiros were beaten 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 by the Isle of Man pairing of Sean Drewry and Anna Kirk.

Thomas teamed up with Christopher Weeks to overpower the Guernsey duo of Chris Freeman and Pieter Robinson 6-3, 7-5 in the men’s doubles round of 16.

Also through to the quarter-finals are Manders and Finnigan, who won 6-0, 6-0 against Gibraltar’s Andrzej Bielanowicz and Itay Uman.

In the first round of the men’s golf competition, Jevon Roberts fared best of Bermuda’s representatives after shooting 74 to sit six shots off leader Josef Hacker, from Jersey. Oliver Betschart and Adam Perry produced rounds of 75, with Jarryd Dillas going around in 83.

On the opening day of women’s individual golf, Ebonie Cox carded a first-round score of 73 to sit in second position, one shot behind leader Anabelle Lucas-Villar, of Jersey. Kimberly Botelho is sixteenth on 82, Tracy Burgess's 84 places her 20th and Ann Symonds is 30th with a score of 100.

Day three of sailing saw Nicole Stovell remain with a chance of winning a medal in the ICLA Class regatta. Stovell ended the day in fourth position with 18 points. Azhai Smith dropped down from eighth to ninth on 40 points.
