Injured Estwanik unlikely to compete

Ashley Estwanik says it is unlikely she will compete in International Race Weekend (IRW) after limping out of last weekend’s Fairmont to Fairmont Road Race with a hamstring injury.Estwanik, who won last year’s Women’s Triangle Challenge as well as the Local Women’s mile, had planned on running the Half-Marathon and was debating whether to take part in the KPMG Invitational Front Street Mile. The hamstring injury she suffered last Sunday has been niggling the May 24th champion for some time and with the (IRW) just a few days away she admits it is unlikely she will recover in time.“I was running with Victoria (Fiddick) and Vivian (Lockhead) about two and a half miles in (the Fairmont to Fairmont race) and felt my hamstring bugging me, although it has been a recurring thing, so I didn’t really worry about it,” said Estwanik.“But shortly after I felt as if it was going to tear so I had to stop and drop out and walk a bit before trying to jog which wasn’t happening, so I ended up being picked up.“At this point it probably does rule me out of the weekend, but I think I will see how it goes but today it’s a bit sore so I don’t think I will be competing in anything serious. If I do, I will do the half-marathon slowly to have fun but that’s as far as it goes.“I was originally going to do the mile, but that’s definitely out.”Estwanik said she had no idea the length of time her injury would keep her out of action for.“It’s a day-to-day thing because I haven’t torn (the hamstring), if anything it will be a small micro tear or a pull so I really don’t know. I can walk around fine but that’s about it,” she said. With Estwanik appearing unable to defend her mile and Triangle titles, there will be a host of competitors hoping to fill her shoes.“I don’t have any favourites at the moment, I haven’t spoken to Victoria about what she is doing but if she was to run the 10K or the half-marathon I think she would be the favourite because she is strong over the long distance,” she said. “Jennifer Alen is also really good at the shorter distances.”n For The Royal Gazette’s special International Race Weekend supplement, see tomorrow’s newspaper.
