800m agony for Evans

Athlete of the Year nominee Aaron Evans came agonisingly close to winning the 800 metre final at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.Evans, representing the University of Georgia, clocked a time of one minute, 49.76 –seconds, only .08 seconds –behind race winner Fred Samoei of Alabama.Evans qualified for the final after placing second in his heat.Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson saw the race and was pleased with the performance, although she admitted he did let the win slip through his fingers.“I am happy with that,” said Watson. “The placing is a great improvement from last year when he placed seventh.“I think he is set up for a good outdoor season as he will be running against the same athletes.”Evans also competed in the 4X400 relay, where he helped his team to a fourth-placed –finish.Also competing at the championships were Bermudians Latroya Darrell and Allison Outerbridge, both in triple jump.Darrell also attends the University of Georgia while Outerbridge studies at the University of Tennessee.Darell finished fourth with a leap of 12.81metres, while Outerbridge jumped 11.75metres, good enough for 13.Colleen Felix won the event.
