Olympic hopeful Flora Duffy faded after making a blistering start to the Monterrey ITU Triathlon World Cup at the weekend, finishing in 27th position.Duffy, who won her previous race the Mazatlan ITU Triathlon in Mexico posted a time of two hours, 26 seconds, just over three minutes behind winner Sarah Haskins of the USA (1:57:15).More than 70 women began the race and out of the 1.5km swim, Duffy was part of the lead group along with Haskins, Pamela Nascimento Oliveira, of Brazil, Japan’s Akane Tsuchihashi, Claudia Rivas, of Mexico and Hungarian Margit Vanek. The leaders held a 40-second gap to their pursuers.On the second lap on bike, Duffy and Haskins broke away from the rest and worked together to build a lead.Haskins worked with Duffy for the half of the 40km bike course but eventually pulled away from her and went solo. She built a lead of one minute, 24 seconds from the main pack by the end of the bike segment.“Once I got on the bike, I noticed that Flora and I had a gap right away,” said Haskins, who claimed her first win in the ITU World Cup.“About with three laps, two and a half laps to go, I just looked behind me I didn’t see Flora, so I just kind of made the decision, I only had two and a half laps to go, I just went.”Duffy emerged from the swim in a time of 19:13, then finished the 40km bike course in 1:01.00 before completing the 10k run in 38:55.Japan’s Ai Ueda claimed silver for the second straight year.
