Naude and Tobey claim top Triathlon honours

Evan Naude won the Tokio Millenium Re Triathlon yesterday.

Evan Naude and Kristyn Tobey continued their assault on the local triathlon scene with the pair victorious in The Tokio Millennium Re Triathlon yesterday.Naude won the men's race in a time of one hour, two minutes, 54 seconds, while Tobey finished the women's division race in one hour, 11 minutes, 57 seconds. The duo recently won the Bermuda National Duathlon Championships. The course, 750 metre swim in Hamilton Harbour, a 20K bike ride and a 5K run through the capital, returned to the city this year after previously being held at Clearwater.“We had ideal conditions for racing,” said Naude, who had never previously won the race. “The sea was flat and the sun wasn't too bad, so that helped. On the bike there were a lot of sharp corners which made braking technical.“Jonathan Herring and I were tussling most of the way, he's very good technically on the bike so it made me work harder.“Going into the corners he was putting distance between us and I had to catch him on the uphills, so we passed each other a few times and it set up for a nice finish.“He was ahead of me getting off the bike, so I had to catch him on the run which made it a fun race towards the end.”Herring was second across the line in a time of one hour, five minutes, 36 seconds, while Mark Wilcox (1:08:44) rounded out the top three finishers.Naude said he had to play catch-up after the swim and pointed to his run as the main reason he was successful.“I didn't have a strategy on how I would race, since it's a sprint race you have to go as quick as you can from the start,” he said.“I know I'm not the best swimmer so I had a fairly good swim by my standards which helped, but normally I have a deficit I have to pull back.“You can always get better, but this is the first time I won the event so I'm very happy with that.”It was a different scenario for Tobey, however, who had to claw back a two and a half minute deficit from the swim to power home ahead of Martina Olcheski-Bell and Cora Lee Starzomski.“It was a great race, I love this event and it's the first event of the season so you want to start the year strong,” said Tobey.“Everyone shows up in high numbers and are excited for the season to start and for them to move it back to Hamilton was good because you bring the fun back to the city and people can come out and support you.“I was behind in the swim by two minutes or so and had to chase on the bike and run.“I know swimming is my weak point and I know that coming out of the water I have to catch up which is a strength of mine.“I haven't won Tokio before so this is a good start to the season for me and I'm excited for the rest of the events.”In the junior divisions, Timothy Vieira held off Max and Cameron de Ste Croix to win the seven to ten age group.Ross Cooper won the Junior Mountain Bike seven to 11 age group, while Warwick Winners beat Francis Patton Primary in the junior teams division.Alana Caldwell won the Try a Tri competition, with Scott Watson-Brown coming second and Neil McConachie finishing third.
