Distance man Marshall called up for CAC Seniors

Lamont Marshall on his way to finishing second in last month’s Bermuda Day Half Marathon. Marshall will have the chance to test himself against some of the region’s best distance runners at the CAC Senior Championships after being called into Bermuda’s squad. The CAC Seniors will be held in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, from July 15-17.

Distance runner Lamont Marshall has been named in a strong Bermuda squad for this summer’s CAC Senior Championships in Puerto Rico.Marshall, who finished runner-up in last month’s May 24 Half Marathon Derby, joins local leading lights Aaron Evans, Arantxa King and Tyrone Smith in the Island’s team, which will compete in Mayaguez from July 15 -17.Bermuda’s team of nine also includes Shianne Smith, Andrea Jackson, Jasmine Brunson and youngster Darico Clarke. Alexis Bean was included in yesterday’s squad but has since withdrawn because of injury.Donna Watson, president of the Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA), expects several “stellar performances” from the athletes, many of whom competed in the “Isle of Enchantment” at last summer’s CAC Games.“Bermuda will be sending a very strong team to the CAC Senior Championships,” she said. “Most of these athletes are attempting to meet the standards for the World Championships and most of them have already met the standards for the Pan Am Games.”“We are excited to have Lamont Marshall join us and we look forward to him having a great event. Lamont’s looking very good with the times he has run this season, so this will be exciting to see him up against the middle distance runners in our region especially the Mexican distance athletes.”Long jumper Tyrone Smith lept his way into the history books by winning the gold medal at the CAC Games last summer.And Watson said she was looking for another strong showing from Bermuda’s Male Athlete of the Year.“Tyrone is performing well over in Europe and we anticipate him having another stellar performance,” said Watson.Aaron Evans is still recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained while competing for the University of Georgia last month, but Watson believes he will be ready in time for the CACs.The BTFA yesterday also –announced the four athletes who would be representing the –Island at next month’s World Youth Championships in Lille, France.In preparation for the event, which runs from July 6-10, Jeneko Place, Scott Clarke, Kyle Webb and Bruce DeGrilla, will head to the Regional Development Centre in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to work with some of the top coaches in the Caribbean –before heading to France.Watson believes sprinter Place will be determined to shine after having his Carifta Games ruined through injury.“We will be looking for some good performances especially from Jeneko Place who has recovered from his injury that spoiled his Carifta Games,” she said. “I think because of that Jeneko is very hungry to perform well and I’ve no doubt that he will in the 100 and 200 metres.”Watson said a few female athletes had met the qualifying standard but were too young to compete at the Championships.Bermuda’s CAC Senior Championships team: Tyrone Smith (long jump), Aaron Evans (800m), Tre Houston (100m, 200m), Lamont Marshall (1,500m, 5,000m), Darico Clarke (800m), Shianne Smith (heptathlon), Arantxa King (long jump), Andrea Jackson (heptathlon), Jasmine Brunson (long jump)Team manager: Tamika WilliamsTeam coach: Devon BeanBermuda’s World Youth Championships team: Jeneko Place (100m, 200m, medley relay), Scott Clarke (100m, medley relay), Kyle Webb (200m, medley relay), Bruce DeGrilla (medley relay)Team manager/coach: Xavier James
