Mixed bag of results for Bermuda’s youngsters
It was a bittersweet day yesterday for Bermuda’s players at the ITF Junior Tournament being played at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium.Of the four local under-18 players to take to the court former Caribbean number one Tyler Smith, Neal Towlson, Taylor McHarg and Eva Frazzioni only Smith managed to make it through to the second round of the competition.Smith defeated Alexandra Miller-Krasilnikov 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to book a place in the next round where she will face fourth seed Anna Wierda of the United States.Admitting that nerves played a role early on in her match, Smith said she was delighted to be marching on.“I was a bit nervous at first but after we played a few games it was okay and felt good to be out there,” said Smith.“Playing at home is always great and I’m happy to get through to the next round, there was plenty of support out there for me and I really appreciate that. I don’t have any real expectations for myself right now apart from playing well, so we will see how it goes in the next round.”Towlson didn’t fare as well as Smith in his opening round match, falling 6-1, 3-6, 5-7 to American Jonathan Heidenberg, although the Bermudian conceded that his opponent deserved to win.“I felt pretty good minus my little hand injury but the level of play was good, I just wish I was on the opposite side of the result,” said Towlson, who attends the acclaimed Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, Florida.“The rallies were good, but I think I went for a bit too much too often, but other than that I think I played fairly well.“He was more consistent than me in the crucial moments and had smarter shots than me and placing them better than I was, but when I did come in I was effective but I wasn’t always doing this and he capitalised on my mistakes.”Bermuda’s third senior, Eva Frazzioni, also fell in her opening round match, losing to Haley Thoresen, of the US, 6-0, 6-0, while Taylor McHarg also went down in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, to Katerina Stewart of the US.In the boys under-14 Division, Bermudian Billy Boyle won his match in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 over brother Courtland Boyle, while James Finnigan defeated Charles Keyes in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 in the second all-Bermuda match. Wildcard spots were available for the top four Bermudians in men and womens under-18 and under-14 competitions, with more than 20 nations being represented.
