High hopes for Place at Worlds

Bermuda sprinter Jeneko Place has been tipped to make his mark in the men’s 200 metres at the Youth World Championships in France after missing out on the 100 metres quarter-finals.Place, who had a disappointing Carifta Games due to an injury, finished third in his 100 metres heat in yesterday’s opening day in a time of 10.88 seconds, but it wasn’t quick enough to qualify for the next stage. His team-mate Scott Clarke also failed to reach the quarters despite posting a personal best of 11.08 to finish his heat in fifth. Also representing the Island at the Championships are Kyle Webb (200m and medley relay) and Bruce DeGrilla (medley relay). A few of Bermuda’s female athletes had also met the qualifying standard but were too young to compete. In preparation for the event, which runs until Saturday, Bermuda’s foursome headed to the Regional Development Centre in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to work with some of the top coaches in the Caribbean.Donna Watson, Bermuda Track and Field Association president, believes the best is yet to come at the Championships for Place, the recently crowned 200m national champion.“Xavier James who is the coach has sent us back a report that the athletes are looking very good in training,” she said. “There are no injuries so I am looking for some good performances.“I have hopes for Jeneko as he has been very focused after his disappointment at the Carifta Games. Jeneko’s stronger event might be the 200m and as we’ve seen in the National Championships he is currently in great shape.“We have a pretty strong medley relay team and it is just about getting the baton as clean as possible around that track.”The seventh edition of the Championships are being held in Lille, France. with stadium-based events at Stadium Lille-Métropole.Athletes must be aged 16 or 17 to compete.
