The evergreen Kent Richardson and another veteran, Karen Bordage, captured individual men’s and women’s honours in yesterday’s Bank of Bermuda Foundation Triathlon at Clearwater Beach.Richardson won the men’s division in an overall time of one hour, six minutes and 19 seconds while Bordage claimed women’s honours in one hour, ten minutes and 43 seconds.Richardson has been in sparkling form this year and yesterday he left the youngsters in his wake as he produced another vintage display belying his 52 years. He said the key to his first Bank of Bermuda Triathlon win in a decade owed much to the hard work he had put in this year towards improving his swimming technique.“The key was just a strong swim and then I didn’t have to redline the bike as much and then have a steady run really,” Richardson said. “I have been working really hard this year on a whole new approach to the swimming, and it has paid off.”Richardson said he felt confident going into yesterday’s triathlon.“I had some good signs that things were on the right track, especially with my swim,” he said. “I arrived here thinking I’m ready and in good shape and thought it’s like time to have a really good one.”Richardson entered yesterday’s event on the back of some stellar performances competing both domestically and abroad.Earlier this year the affable athlete secured podium finishes competing in the 50-51 and 50-54 Triathlon Series in the US as well as a respectable 36th in his age group at last month’s World Championships in Beijing, China. He also came second in this year’s National Duathlon for added measure.“I’m really happy and at 52 I just wanted to throw down really hard and cap the year off,” Richardson said. “The year started great and it’s nice to finish it off like this.”Cameron Rose (one hour, eight minutes and 31seconds) and Matt Thompson (one hour, nine minutes and one second) finished second and third among the men’s division.Bordage finished more than eight minutes ahead of nearest rival Gabriella Arnold (one hour, 18 minutes and 20 seconds) in the women’s field to cross the line sixth overall. It was a performance that caught the athlete by surprise given her modest preparation going into yesterday’s event.“I haven’t particularly trained for the triathlon nor been doing a lot of cycling so I was absolutely thrilled with my performance,” she said. “I had a much better run and swim than I was expecting, so I surprised myself and really enjoyed the day.“I just tried to pace myself nice and steady throughout the entire race so that I would have a nice result, and that’s exactly what I did. The conditions were great and it was a nice, calm day for a race.”Emma O’Connell rounded off the women’s podium finishers in a time of one hour, 20 minutes and 22 seconds.Team Last Minute (57 minutes and 11 seconds) clinched the Open Team title, Baby Mamas (one hour, 14 minutes and nine seconds) won the Female Team title, while Butterfield and Vallis (one hour, three minutes and 58 seconds) won the Corporate Team division.Bermuda Regiment One (one hour, 13 minutes and eight seconds) took the Service Team title, Long Run (one hour, ten minutes and 52 seconds) won the Non-Competitive Team title while Ferreira (one hour, 11 minutes and 46 seconds) were the only team competing in the Family Team division.Victoria Davis (35 minutes and 55 seconds) and Caleb Simmons (38 minutes and 51 seconds) were the top senior girl and boy in the Junior Triathlon.Team Haak/Lee/Dowling (45 minutes and 46 seconds) and Team Palmer (38 minutes and 59 seconds) went uncontested in the girls 11-12 Mountain Bike/BMX and Road Racing Bike team events, while the team of Mosely/O’Shaughnessy/Neal won the boys’ 11-12 Road Racing team race in 34 minutes and 51 seconds.* For more pictures, click here.
