Injured Duffy pairs up with mother

Flora Duffy is expected to take part in the SheROX Triathlon on Sunday, despite suffering from a foot injury. The Island’s top female triathlete has signed up to take part in the team race along with mother Maria Duffy. While Maria Duffy will complete the 5k running element of the sprint distance triathlon, Flora will do the 0.8k swim and the 20k bike ride.Last year’s team winners, Bermuda Tri Angles (Victoria Fiddick, Bridget Telenko and Sarah Bonnet) have yet to announce if they will enter again, although with Fiddick missing last weekend’s Crimestoppers 5k through injury her participation is still doubtful.Meanwhile, Flora Duffy’s absence from the individual race means that defending champion Karen Smith is likely to be the favourite to win, although Karen Bordage, who won the Bank of Bermuda Triathlon two weeks ago, will also fancy her chances. With few overseas elite runners making the trip, locals are expected to dominate a race that has attracted more than 200 athletes already.Kristin Toby and Gabriella Arnold will also take part, however Joanna Shillington and Coralee Starzomski will not race. Shillington has broken her wrist while Starzomski is taking part in an Ironman in Canada this weekend.Sunday’s event marks the second time the SheRox has been to the Island and will be the final competition in the series’ nine-race season. The event begins at 7am at Fairmont Southampton and will see South Shore closed to all traffic as the bike and run portions of the race sees contestants sprinting between Paget Lights and Barnes Corner.“The Bermuda Department of Tourism is excited to host the second annual SheRox Bermuda Triathlon,” said William Griffith, Director of the Bermuda Department of Tourism.“We welcome the opportunity to partner with such a well known triathlon organisation to enhance Bermuda’s sport tourism product for our visitors and residents. We would like to thank the volunteers who support this event and wish the competitors and organisers much success this weekend.”Founded in 2007, the SheROX Series has expanded to nine events through a partnership with Life Time Fitness, Inc. (NYSE: LTM) including stops in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Aurora, Colorado, Philadelphia, Webster, Massachusetts, Naperville, Illinois, Federal Way, Washington, San Diego, Detroit and Bermuda.“With one of the most beautiful race courses in all of triathlon, we’re excited to bring the SheROX experience back to Bermuda this weekend,” said Barb McKeever, SheROX Series Director.“We want to thank the Bermuda Department of Tourism and the people of Bermuda for welcoming us back as we showcase this beautiful island to our SheROX athletes. By providing an inclusive race experience, the SheROX Series has encouraged more than 10,000 women to participate in triathlon and live an active and healthier lifestyle.”
