Kenyan pair resume battle

Phillip Lagat breakes the tape in last year's Front Street win

One of the outstanding overseas athletes to compete in the Bermuda Marathon Weekend during the past few years is returning this week.Kenya’s Shadrack Biwott claimed a hat-trick of victories in 2010 when he won the KPMG Front Street Mile, the 10K and the Half-Marathon. Biwott also competed last year and retained his 10K and Half-Marathon titles, but was beaten in the mile by fellow countryman Phillip Lagat.Biwott and Lagat will battle again this Friday as two of the elite milers lined up for the blue ribbon event. Also due to race is Canada’s Tim Konoval, Ethiopia’s Fikadu Lemma and Bermuda’s Chayce Smith.In the women’s elite mile the three-time champion Kenia Sinclair, of Jamaica, will be missing. The 2011 runner-up Korene Hinds (Jamaica) is lined up to compete against Rolanda Bell (Panama), Mardrea Hyman (Jamaica) and Jeanna Composti (US).The elite 10K race field will feature Biwott, Lagat and last year’s women’s champion Hinds.In the Half-Marathon, Biwott and Lagat will once again meet, while American Composti will feature in the women’s race.The Bermuda Marathon will see the return of the 2010 men’s and women’s champions, Richard Kessio (Kenya) and Elena Orlova (Russia) respectively, and the 2011 women’s champ Stephanie Hodge (Canada). Also competing in the men’s race will be Ethiopians Derje Hailegiorgis, Fikadu Lemma and Tesfaye Dube. In the women’s race the other elite guest athletes are Ethiopia’s Muliye Gurma and Mikides Bekele.
