Three?s company: Ethiopians Dereje Hailegiorgis (left), Fikadu Lemma (centre) and Tesfaye Dube complete the first lap of the marathon. Dube took first place, Lemma second and Hailegjorgis third.

Elite guest runner Tesfaye Dube cruised to victory in yesterday’s marathon to complete an impressive Bermuda Marathon Weekend double at the first attempt. The softspoken Ethiopian, who resides in New York, covered the 26.2 mile race course in 2:24.17 to add the marathon title to the Elite Men’s Mile crown he captured on Friday.Fellow countrymen Fikadu Lemma (2:25.59) and Dereje Hailegiorgis (2:32.43) placed second and third respectively as Ethiopian runners made a clean sweep on the podium.Amazingly, senior masters runner Antun Dezevic was the first local to finish. The 68-year-old athlete, a May 24 Derby and marathon veteran, completed the course in 3:35.14, to place 15th overall.Bermuda’s Marathon Man Cal Steede brought up his century, finishing his 100th marathon with a time of 4:02.38 (27th overall)He was the third Bermuda runner behind Karl Wilson (3:37.49, 21st overall).Dube, who has run a sub-2:20:00 marathon in the past, was delighted with the result but said he found the course to be “dangerous”.“I am very happy to win because it was a dangerous course . . . it was a very hard course with lots of hills,” he added.“I like Bermuda but the course is very hard. I like the people and the country is very beautiful and hopefully I can come back.”Dube, Lemma and Hailegiorgis all reside in the Big Apple where they run for West Side Runners Club.Club president Bill Staab, said the trio arrived in Bermuda with high expectations of doing well this year.“It was our hope that the three runners would come in one, two and three,” he said. “But you never know in a marathon what is going to happen and don’t know the competition because it’s an international race.”Staab said the Ethiopian runners found the race course “surprising”.“The course is a bit of a surprise to them for two reasons: one, it’s extremely beautiful running along the water and into the hills and pastel houses and secondly it is a very difficult and unrelenting course for a good time.“The Ethiopian runners were happy to be in a warmer climate for a few days because they do not like the winter in New York. We are very pleased that all of the runners did well and finished strongly.”Claiming a second Bermuda Marathon Weekend women’s marathon title this year was Russia’s Elana Orlova who covered the course in 2:46.34 to shave more than a minute off her previous fastest time (2:47.26) in this event. The 2010 winner said her goal this year was to break the women’s record of 2:40.32 set by Elena Makolova in 2002. But it was a feat that ultimately proved beyond the Russian’s reach.“I wanted to run for the record, but I didn’t have any company to run together and the wind was stronger in the second half of the race it was very windy,” she said.“It was a very difficult course, but I am very happy to win.”Like men’s marathon winner Dube, Orlova hopes to return to defend her title next year.“The people here are very nice and hopefully I can come again to this nice island,” she said.Ethiopia’s Mikides Bekele (3:06.27) and Muliye Gurmu (3:06.32) rounded off the podium finishers in the women’s field.Ronnie Wong, a former Bermuda resident who has been competing in the Race Weekend marathon for more than 20 years, clocked 3:47.21Bermuda’s first female to finish was Jill Montgomery in 3:55.00 to take ninth place.
