Tamika shows talent at longer distance
Tamika Williams believes her long distance training has paid off after being the first local female to cross the finish line at the National Sports Centre in the Bermuda Marathon Weekend 10K.Williams finished fourth overall, stopping the clock at 41 minutes and 15 seconds, ahead of second local Joanne Shillington who was fifth overall in 42.21.The Open Women’s mile champion on Friday night showed little signs of fatigue, going out with the lead pack. The former Warwick Academy student said she was pleased with her performance, noting that while the longer distances aren’t her strong suit, she was quickly adapting to the rigours and putting in hard work behind the scenes.“Being primarily an 800 metre runner and only lately doing cross-country, I wanted to come out and try the longer distances and it worked out for me today,” said Williams.“I decided to just come out here and see what time I could do and to break the line in the time I did was pleasing.”Williams admitted that her main goal for the weekend was to win the shorter distance event (on Friday) although putting in a good performance in the 10K was also on the list of her goals. She said conditions during the race were similar as the previous evening, particularly on the way back to the NSC on North Shore.“My legs are a little tired and cramped as would most of the other runners’ legs would be from last night, and having to come back again I just had to test my limits.“I wasn’t really focused on the 10K, last night was my main focus so today was a bonus and to be first local female is great.“The conditions weren’t that much different from running the mile, you could feel the breeze on North Shore but I actually enjoy this weather, it isn’t as bad as running in the heat so overall it was great.”
