BLTA hope to persuade Rego to stick with Bermuda

The BLTA are concerned they might lose the services of talented teenager Chris Rego to Canada. Bermudian Rego has a Canadian parent and now lives in the North American country.

Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) hope promising teenager Chris Rego will nail his colours to the Island’s mast instead of switching his allegiances to Canada.Rego, who has a Canadian parent and now lives in the North American country, is widely considered the top male to come through the BLTA junior programme in recent years and had been expected to become a key member of the Bermuda national team. But with Rego competing as a Canadian at this week’s Bank of Bermuda Foundation ITF Junior Circuit Tournament, the BLTA now fear they might have lost the 16-year-old for good.BLTA president Coleridge Place admitted it would serve as a blow to lose Rego’s services having invested heavily in the youngster’s development.“There’s been a lot of investment in Chris and we’re all very proud of him,” said Place. “He had to move to Canada because of family reasons and we understand that.“He has a lot of talent and we are all looking forward to seeing him break into something.“The investment has been tremendous in him and we have big hopes for him.”Place said the BLTA hadn’t given up on persuading Rego to compete for the country of his birth.“It’s tricky at the moment — Chris hasn’t played for Canada yet although he’s out there training,” added Place, who said the BLTA awarded Rego a wildcard for this week’s ITF Junior Circuit Tournament.“There are still some options and we’ll have to talk about them. Chris is signed in as a Canadian for this tournament although he’s essentially representing himself. I’m hoping that we can do some talking and negotiating in the next couple of days with Chris’ parents.”Rego suffered an opening round defeat in the Boy’s Under-18 Singles at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium on Monday, losing 6-3, 6-0 to Colombia’s Jorge Vargas. At the previous tournament in 2001 Rego, who has represented Bermuda as on the COTECC Junior Circuit, won the Boys’ Under-14 Singles title.
