Smith’s dreams of Youth Olympics hit by broken arm

Broken arm: Smith

Tyler Smith’s trip to Monterrey, Mexico, for the Youth Olympics qualifiers next week has been dashed by a cycle accident on Tuesday that left him with a broken left arm.

The 15-year-old, one of the Island’s leading young triathletes, was riding home on Harbour Road near the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club when he clipped the curb.

He had just left cycling training with some other junior athletes.

“I had a little too much speed coming into a turn and clipped the kerb,” Smith said. “There was a grassy area so I don’t have any road rash, but I still broke my arm.

“I rode another 15 minutes home and then went back to the hospital.”

Smith, the son of Bermuda triathlete Karen Smith, had planned to miss this weekend’s cycling Grand Prix to focus on the Olympic triathlon qualifiers next week, with Erica Hawley, who studies in England, expected to be in action.

“It’s going to be on Friday next week so obviously I can’t go to that now,” Smith said.

“That was the big race that I’ve been training for the last two months and it’s disappointing that I’m not going to be able to do it.”

Smith will be sidelined for four to six weeks, although he still has his sights set on competing in the junior running race on Bermuda Day.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to do some running and stationary cycling,” he said. “I hope I’m able to run May 24. “Hopefully, I’ll be able to do something then.

“It’s just the arm and could have been a lot worse. It’s just disappointing that I won’t be able to compete in Mexico.”
