Kyme set to face legends

Taking on the best: Nick Kyme

Bermuda’s Nick Kyme will showcase his talents against some of the biggest names in world squash at April’s Randall & Quilter Legends of Squash tournament to be held at Bermuda Squash Racquets Association.

Kyme has been pitted against David Palmer, the defending champion, Peter Nicol and Jonathan Power — who are all past world and British Open champions — in his opening three matches at the Devonshire squash courts.

The 34-year-old, who has represented Bermuda at last summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, is relishing the opportunity to square off against the star trio.

“It’s an honour and pleasure to get on court with truly legendary players like Palmer, Nicol and Power,” Kyme said. “They have won everything in the game, been role models for many players around the world, and I am just happy to get the chance to be on the court with them”.

Palmer, who hails from Australia, captured his first Randall & Quilter Legends title after defeating former world champion Thierry Lincou, of France, in an enthralling five-set final last year.

Now based in Florida, frequent visitor Palmer is champing at the bit to return to Bermuda for his title defence.

“The chance to play again in Bermuda is always a treat for me and my family,” said Palmer, who won two gold medals at last summer’s Commonwealth Games. “Playing in front of packed crowds and staying at Coral Beach Club is definitely one of my favourite events of the year.”

The Randall & Quilter Legends of Squash event, to be held from April 21 to 25, will see the eight-man draw divided into two groups of four playing round-robin format over three days. The eventual group winners will then compete in the Legends final to be held on Saturday, April 25.

The remaining participating legends include Lee Beachill and Simon Parke, who both hail from England, John White, who is regarded as one of the world’s hardest strikers of the ball, and last year’s runner-up Lincou.

This year’s legends will also share their expertise with the Island’s youth squash players.

“Aside from the amazing matches the legends will play each night, they are also here working with young people at all levels of the game,” Patrick Foster, the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association director of squash, said.

“The players will be getting on court with kids from school groups as well as players totally new to the game of squash.

“They will also be spending time with Bermuda’s junior national squad players in what is an amazing opportunity to learn for all involved.

“It would be a treat to get coaching from one world champion, but to be part of a training session with eight legends of this calibre is truly special”.
