Smith and Estwanik win first aquathlon

Tyler Smith and Ashley Estwanik were the male and female winners of Saturday’s first Bermuda International Aquathlon at Clearwater Beach.

Smith, one of the island’s top young triathletes, dominated the men’s field in winning the 2.5-kilometres run, 1,000-metres swim and 2.5km run in 32min 07sec, 51 seconds ahead of second-placed Ky Hurst, from Oracle Team USA, while Pieter Dehart was third in 34:37.

Erik Soria, in 36:06, and Andrew Farrell, in 36:29, completed the top-five finishers in a men’s field of 20 competitors.

Estwanik, more known for her exploits in road races, was first among 13 female competitors. She crossed the line over two road races around Cooper’s Island reserve and a swim over the same distances in 39:27, 22 seconds ahead of Alicia Hancock in second place, while Lynsey Palmer finished third in 40:07.

Jenny Dehart and Grace Morris were fourth and fifth in 40:41 and 40:51, respectively.

Nicholas Pilgrim was the first junior in the 13 to 15 category in 18:46, while Zebedee Wakely was second in 19:00 and Ashley Irby third in 20:18. In the 11 to 12 age group Sam Williamson took first place in 11:45, followed by Tommy Marshall in 11:53 and Blake Oliveira third in 12:42.

The 13 to 15 juniors had two 2km runs and a 400-metres swim, while the 11 to 12 age group ran 1km, swam 200 metres and finished with another 1km run.
