Swimmers reach qualifying mark for Carifta

The list of swimmers qualifying for the upcoming Carifta Swimming Championships increased as athletes quickly adjusted to competing at a new location. For the first time in more than 30 years, the venue was changed from the Saltus pool, which is under construction, to Warwick Academy’s pool where many athletes turned in outstanding performances.Harbour Club’s Alyssa Paynter reached her qualifying mark in the 11 to 12 girls 100 metre freestyle, dropping nearly a second and a half off her previous time to become the 11th qualified swimmer. Her accomplishment also means that a relay team can be put in in that age group.Josh Irvine, who already achieved his qualifying time in the 100m butterfly, was trying to reach another qualifying time for the 11 to 12 boys 50 butterfly and dropped nearly a full second in achieving that time.In the last event of the day, Jesse Washington and Dejan Wellman took to the water to battle in the 100 metres freestyle.Wellman was looking for his second time and the pair battled all the way to the touch, with the youngster hitting the wall under the qualifying time for the event.“Congratulations to all the swimmers for their great swims today,” said national coach Ben Smith. “After some heavy training at the upcoming training camps over the next couple of weeks we look forward to adding to this year’s team at the next meet.“Today was the first time that BASA has hosted a meet at a different venue than the Saltus pool in 30 years. With the Saltus pool under construction BASA moved the meet to the Warwick Academy pool in order to make sure that our swimmers had this opportunity to swim for Carifta qualifying times or try to make the BASA training squad.“Some swimmers lowered their times again and will be looking to hit their time on February 23 at the ‘Best of BEST’ meet. Maddie Moore from Sharks Swim Club also lowered Rebecca Sharpe’s 200 metre backstroke record by three seconds.“She already has two times for selection as she looks to continue the long line of successful Bermuda female backstrokers at Carifta.”
