Bermuda’s swimmers will be weighed down by medals when they return from Bahamas after their most successful Carifta Games.

The 15-member team won 39 medals, well up on last year’s haul of 21, with coach Ben Smith praising their performances.

“Our largest haul ever,” Smith wrote in an e-mail yesterday.

“This trip was amazing, great children representing the island at the highest level.”

As well as several gold medals won, including three on the final night of competition when the team picked up ten medals, there was also four Carifta records set by Bermuda’s swimmers.

Sam Williamson set a record in the 100 metres breaststroke which he won in a time of 1min 13.04sec, while Elan Daley capped off an outstanding first championships by setting a new Carifta record in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.58. Payton Zelkin and the 4x100 metres freestyle relay team also broke Carifta records.

Daley won ten medals, including four gold, as she also helped the girls 4x50 relay team win the silver in the freestyle. Zelkin, also a part of that relay team, collected a total of 11 medals in the 11-12 girls division, while Williamson picked up seven medals.

The Bermuda team won 24 medals in Barbados in 2015 and 22 the previous year when they competed in Aruba.
