Daley acquits herself well in South Korea

Elan Daley broke her Bermuda record in the 200 metres freestyle when she placed second in her heat at the World Aquatic Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.

Daley, who turned 14 in February, is the youngest competitor among swimmers from Sweden, Hong Kong, China, Australia, Italy, Canada, United States, Great Britain, Russia, Japan and France, clocked a time of 2min 5.47sec.

It was good enough to break her previous Bermuda age-group record of 2:10.26, which she set at the 2018 Carifta Championships in Jamaica, but did not get her among the 18 qualifiers and reserves after the seven completed heats, as her time was 38th fastest overall out of 61 starters.

All the 16 qualifiers and two reserves touched the wall in less than two minutes, with Sarah Sjöström, of Sweden, clocking the fastest time of 1:55.14.

Bermuda is represented at the World Championships by Daley, Jesse Washington and Madelyn Moore. Washington was due to see action last night in the 100 metres freestyle heats.

He and Moore will also represent Bermuda at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, starting tomorrow. That team contains 17 athletes in seven sports.
