Swimmers make a splash at Long Course meet

Logan Jones was top individual performer

Bermuda’s swimmers counted down to the Long Course National Championships in a couple of weeks with a three-day meet at the National Sports Centre last weekend.

Both the Harbour Club and the Sharks Club were out in force, with several athletes posting performances full of promise for the national championships, which is set to feature a visiting squad from British Virgin Islands.

In the 10 & Under Girls competition, the youngest female age group, Myla Desjardins took top honours with 1,554 points. Desjardins showed impressive versatility to beat Alanna Frawley who finished on 1,388 points, with third place going to Aine Fahy (1,320).

Desjardins elder sister Eva, 12, impressed in the 11-12 age group by accumulating 2,572 points across seven events. Evelyn Fahy claimed second with 2,227 points, while Vera Connolly rounded out the podium in third with 2,092.

The 13-14 Girls age group provided the most competitive top-two battle in the female programme, with Madison Fox (2,890pts) pipping Harbour team-mate Colette Durkin (2,690). Allison Steynor, representing Sharks, took third with 2,404.

Lila Connolly, 16, was top of the bill in the 15 & Over Girls age group. She scored 2,891 points, with her best performance of 467 points coming in the 50 metres freestyle. Scarlett Spurling, 15, finished second with 2,084 points and produced the highest individual event score among the girls with 498 points in the 100 freestyle. Joy Yammine, 16, rounded out the top three on 1,093.

On to the boys and Joseph Herron was the sole competitor in the 10 & Under competition, scoring 909 points across six events.

Walker Smith and Maxwell Williams had some great battles in the 11-12 division, with Smith just claiming top honours on 1,723 points. Williams, 12, gave admirable chase, finishing on 1,578. Third place went to Niklas Bock, 11, with 1,395.

Logan Jones, 16, was the meet’s outstanding individual performer in the 15 & Over boys division, racking up a huge 3,704 points from seven events. Axel Wernbo, 16, took second place with 3,245 points, while Noah Fulton, 15, finished third on 3,135.

Despite Jones’ domination, the best individual performance by a male swimmer came from Olympian Jack Harvey, who had the honour of being formally introduced to King Charles on Friday. Harvey picked up 752 points for his display in the 50 metres backstroke.
